Here are New US Laws That Will Take Effect This 2020
New laws in the US will take effect at the start of the new decade involving data privacy, electronic vehicles, legalization of recreational pot, plastic ban, and more.
The following are some of the new laws in the US that had taken effect on New Year's Day:
1. Data Privacy Law
This law allows consumers to view the activities that companies are doing with their customer's personal information. This will allow the consumers to control the activity of companies involving their sale of customer's personal information to outside parties or companies. This will also allow consumers to exercise the power of deleting the information that they had shared with the company. The new law will also be prohibiting companies to sell data to minors aged below 16 in the absence of consent.
The new law primarily aims to control the commercial powers of the social media industry's large companies such as Facebook and Twitter. It is also applicable to all large companies operating in California and is collecting the personal information of their customers.
2. The Red Flag Law of Colorado
This new law in Colorado will allow family members and law enforcement to request for the seizure of guns and other firearms possessed by people whom they see as threats to themselves and/or citizens.
The seizure of the firearms can be as long as one year and the duty to cancel the judgment rest on the owner of the firearms seized.
3. Electronic Vehicles
A few states in the country are charging the owners of electric cars to pay registration charges. This is for the gradual shift of the country in lowering the taxes for gas consumption.or
Ohio and Alabama will be collecting $200 as registration fees for electric cars, $100 for the people in Kansas, and $50 for the citizens of Hawaii. Oregon, Iowa, and Utah will also be charging registration fees for electric vehicle owners.
4. Legalization of Recreational Marijuana in Illinois
Recreational marijuana is now legalized in Illinois. This means that those who are 21 years old and older are allowed by law to purchase and use marijuana from specific sellers and in controlled volumes.
Based on the report by Chicago Tribune, there are forty-three stores of marijuana that have been approved by the government of the state. People in Chicago had built a line for six in the morning to buy their recreational marijuana.
It should be noted that it is still illegal to use recreational marijuana outdoors, in educational institutions, near minor, and other public areas in the state.
5. Plastic Bag Ban in Oregon
The plastic bag ban of the state is their way of reducing the excessive amount of plastic by its citizens. It also aims to reduce its negative impact on recycling streams including the endangerment of the lives of workers who are tasked to untangle plastic wastes in the recycling streams of the state.
The law also aims to reduce the negative effects of improper plastic disposal on the ocean that is affecting a wide variety of wildlife in the ocean.
6. Bail Reform in New York
This is one of the new laws in US that stops the pre-trial detention and bail for many felony cases including 2nd-degree burglary and 2nd-degree robbery. It was estimated by the governor of the state, Andrew Cuomo that 90% of the accused will be prevented from detention before the resolution of their cases.
