The box office weekend will serve up a rather interesting scenario as low-budget film "The Fault in Our Stars" is slated to destroy the visual-effects-heavy "Edge of Tomorrow."

"The Fault in Our Stars," which features "Divergent" stars Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort, is expected to take the top spot with a eye-opening $45 million gross. The film is based on a popular novel, which means that a great portion of its intake will come from fans of the book. According to Box Office Mojo, the movie's trailer has registered over 20 million views. The film has solid reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, and it is likely that the installed fan base and solid critical reception should help the film claim the top spot at the box office. It will only show in 3,173 theaters.

"Edge of Tomorrow," which stars Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise, is expected to open second with a disappointing $32 million. According to Box Office Mojo, the film's budget is listed as $178 million. A gross this low would likely spell doom for the film in its aspirations of recouping the aforementioned budget. The film also means a great deal for Cruise who has failed to deliver a hit studio film since "Mission Impossible 4"; however that film belonged to an established franchise, and many believe that his bankability is waning. Last year, Cruise's "Oblivion" debuted to a disappointing $37 million. A worse intake on opening weekend for "Edge of Tomorrow" would put a huge dent on Cruise's potential to star in other high-concept films. Ironically, "Edge of Tomorrow" is being lauded for its top-notch acting and its defining concept. The film is expected to open in 3,490 theaters.

"Malificent," which took the top spot last weekend, is expected to settle in at number three with a gross of approximately $31.2 million. That number is so close to the predictions for "Edge of Tomorrow" that it is not inconceivable that the Angelina Jolie hit could potentially edge out Cruise's latest flick and wind up finishing second. Expect the film to end its weekend with $124 million.

"X-Men: Days of Future Past" is expected to finish fourth with a gross of $18.2 million. The film had a terrific opening weekend but endured a steep drop in its second weekend and could face yet another if it falls under the $20 million mark in its third weekend. The superhero adaptation currently has a gross of $171 Million (as of June 4) and could end its weekend near the $200 million mark. "X-Men" is expected to drop its theater count by 362.

"A Million Ways to Die in the West" is expected to continue flopping with pundits claiming it will only bring in $8 million on the weekend. This would bring its cume to $30 million. The film has struggled because of poor word-of-mouth and scathing reviews despite possessing an all-star cast.

"Night Moves," which features Jesse Eisenberg, Dakota Fanning and Peter Sarsgaard, is expanding into another 29 theaters, bringing its count to 31. The Cinedigm Entertainment release has not lived up to expectations thus far. The movie has only grossed $24,100; the company's previous summer hit "Short Term 12" grossed $1 million throughout its run. "Night Moves" current gross does not indicate that the film will be able to manage that feat, though it will be interesting to see how audiences respond to it.

Jon Favreau's universally praised "Chef" will take another stab at the box office and will expand into another 674 theaters, bringing its wide release count to 1,298. The film, which stars Latino actors Sofia Vergara and John Leguizamo, has struggled to assert itself in wide release. The film grossed a solid $204,000 while playing in just six theaters during its limited release for a per-theater average of $34,160. However, since expanding into wide release, the film has struggled to sustain an audience and has not been able to crack a per-theater average of $10,000.

Other films opening this weekend include "Anna," "Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon," "Citizen Koch" and "Test." The most anticipated of the batch is the Sundance hit "Obvious Child," which has remarkable reviews and is being released by A24, the company that previously released hits such as "Spring Breakers" and "Under the Skin."
