Family, friends and supporters commemorated the death of Travis Alexander on Wednesday, the 30-year-old California salesman who was brutally slain six years ago by his ex-girlfriend Jodi Arias.

Alexander was murdered in his suburban Phoenix, Arizona home on June 4, 2008. According to medical examiners, the convicted boyfriend killer stabbed him 27 times, primarily in the back, torso and heart. She also slit Alexander's throat from ear to ear, nearly decapitating him, and shot him in the face before she dragged his bloodied corpse to the shower where she left him crumpled over. In total, the killing was done in a little less than two minutes.

In May 2013, the 33-year-old waitress was found guilty of first-degree murder. However, the jurors failed to reach a unanimous decision on her sentencing. As a result, a retrial is set for Sept. 8 to determine whether or not she should be sentenced to death, life in prison or life with a chance of release after serving 25 years, Reuters reported.

As the Alexander family waits for Arias' upcoming retrial, they marked the sixth year anniversary of his death by gathering around his gravesite in California, reports AZfamily.com.

Likewise, a small group of supporters in Arizona held a vigil in his memory at the Maricopa County Superior Courthouse where Arias is being prosecuted.

"We're just here in support of the Alexander family," trial watcher Pamela Jones told 3TV.

The group lit candles, held a moment of silence and released blue balloons in Alexander's honor. They also called for justice on his behalf in regard to the second penalty phase in the Arias trial.

"Whether she gets life or death, it just needs to be over with," said Kathy Brown, one of the organizers of the event.

Mikal Ann Dillon, another organizer, called Alexander's death "heart-wrenching," adding that "No man should be taken from his family in that manner," reports AZ Central.

The next day, a closed-door hearing was held in the Jodi Arias murder case on Thursday. The subject of the hearing was unknown, reports My Fox Phoenix.
