PETA Slams J.Lo for Wearing Feathered Cape in Superbowl Performance
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has slammed Jennifer Lopez for wearing a feathered cape during the recent Super Bowl halftime show. They claim that the making of this cape killed dozens of birds.
Everyone who witnessed the performance of Jennifer Lopez and Shakira, still can't get over it. People watching the broadcast and those that attended the live show in Miami, Florida were stunned on Sunday as Lopez paraded on stage in a custom body-suit with an eye-popping red, white, and blue coat that revealed the flag of Puerto Rico and the United States on the other side.
However, even though the coat made a loud fashion statement, an animal group like PETA is making even louder complaints. They said that the fashion choice of the Latin singer was unnecessary and a exhibited a form of cruelty.
In a post from PETA, they tweeted: "This flag could have flown without killing birds," they added, "dozens of birds were KILLED for this #SuperBowl #PepsiHalfTime performance." The PETA's tweet included a picture of Jennifer Lopez wearing the cape and next to it, an image of dead and plucked birds that were hanging on hooks in a processing plant.
Meanwhile, Mariel Haenn-one of the singer's Superbowl stylists- posted on her Instagram that the singer's feathered coat was custom-made by Versace and it featured 40,000 red, blue, and white feathers that were individually sewn in.
In the official Instagram account of Versace, they posted, "The monumental banner depicts the United States of America's stars and stripes on one side, and Puerto Rico's flag on the other. All feathers used for the flag were sourced ethically."
However, Shakira and Jennifer Lopez were nonetheless greatly praised by most viewers. Their performance was meant to send a strong message for Latinos and Hispanics, most especially about the immigration crisis at the United States Southern border.
Meanwhile, news outlets tried to ask for comments from Jennifer Lopez, but her group have not given any until now regarding the feathered coat she wore during the performance.
One of the best moments of the performance was when Jennifer Lopez, along side her daughter Emme, sang a portion of "Born in the USA" by Bruce Springsteen, backed by a children's choir.
A group of children were also seen singing in cage-like seats that was meant to portray illegal immigrants at the border, bringing awareness to liberal claims of children being mistreated and locked in cages.
As most things do nowadays, the J.Lo/Shakira performance somehow became political. Moreover, despite the criticisms they were well received by the majority of Latinos and Hispanics. Most would say that it was a proud event for the Latino community as they were represented by two of their biggest stars.
Other social media warriors have attacked the pair by claiming that it was derogatory performance and objectified women. One post suggested that the stars' idea of Latin culture is purely sex, pole dancing, and twerking, and that the children participating should instead be shielded from such provocative behavior.
