Experts Say Sleeping in Separate Beds Improves Relationships
A growing trend of couples sleeping in separate beds is believed by experts to help resolve marital issues.
A survey conducted by the National Sleep Foundation in 2017 revealed that one out of four married couples are sleeping in separate beds.
Jill Lankler, a life coach and clinical psychologist from New York, stated that the data regarding couples sleeping in a separate bed is not accurate based on her observations. She believes that she had seen more couples doing the deed.
Some of the problems revealed by couples sleeping together include an insufficient amount of sleep. Couples are seen waking each other while sleeping. This scenario can negatively affect the bonds of a couple.
Couple's Fear of Sleeping in Separate Beds
For practical reasons, sleeping in separate beds can help improve the couple's quality of sleep.
There are many cases when couples are working with different schedules. One of the couples may be snoring while sleeping or have restless legs syndrome. This condition can greatly affect the quality of sleep of one of the couples.
Regardless of the positive effects of couples sleeping in a separate bed, some feel the fear of the nighttime split.
In an article from USA Today, some couples revealed that they believe that the quality of sleep of a couple can be improved by sleeping in separate beds. However, they believe that sleeping in different beds can reduce the intimacy between the couple.
Lankler shared how she had witnessed a couple trying to conquer these fears by being open to honest communication.
Other famous personalities such as UK's Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip and US President Donald Trump and Melania Trump were reported to sleep in different beds.
The decision of couples to sleep in different beds does not indicate that the couple's relationship is in trouble. This is highly truthful, especially for those who implement efforts to keep their relationship stronger.
Some Couples Still Insist on Sleeping in the Same Bed
According to Sophie Jacobi-Parisi, a lawyer from New York, regardless of the many benefits of couples sleeping in separate beds, some still prefer to sleep together in one bed. Jacobi-Parisi is a lawyer at Warshaw Burstein and practices family and matrimonial law.
Jacobi-Parisi revealed how some couples are too busy at work and at raising their children. She said that there should be a period in the day where the two spend time together with others that being a co-parenting, working team.
Jacobi-Parisi stated how a relationship can end in divorce because of sleeping in separate beds and the lack of communication. However, she said that a couple who sleeps together in one bed may not save their relationship if it is not already working.
She had encountered a couple who sleep in the same bed throughout the processing of their divorce. This may result in different interpretations of their children. However, she knows that the couple knows their children better. She advised that parents will make the decision better because they know the specific needs and preferences of their parents. She believes that a couple should be honest with their children regarding their decisions as a couple.
