Mexican Bishops Reach Out to Those Affected By Femicide
During the Mexican bishop's conference, the bishops released a statement regarding the increasing number of femicide and letting everyone know about their campaign on educating people with regard to women's dignity.
Femicide is the act of a man killing a woman because of her gender. The statement about the bishops suggests that the current issues on "brutal murders" of women, especially young girls, have filled not only the bishops, but everyone, with sadness and has left them troubled and thinking.
The five bishops and archbishops who have significant roles in leadership in the conference told teachers, classmates, and parents that they are extending their support, strength, affinity, and reassurance to them.
In the year 2019, a total of 1,006 women and girls in Mexico, were victims of femicide.
The United Nations concluded that next to Brazil, Mexico ranks second for the highest amount of committed femicides in the Latin American nations in a year. Other nations also include the Caribbean and Spain.
The bishops stated that they are genuinely mourning because of the violence and abuse against women which has been displayed with a different and threatening way and that it is too brutal that produces uneasiness, disturbance, hurt, agony, grief, weakness, damages, and an urge for vengeance.
They continued that as they are facing this kind of reality, they want the people affected by these crimes to boost their confidence, speak up, and voice out the pain and it breaks their heart. They wanted to be the one who will voice their feelings out by speaking from the faith that they have so that they can speak up through words, speeches, and discussions.
They added that the cries of pain of the victims of the violence and abuse are trying to reach out to heaven for justice and that the Christians should not remain silent and apathetic. They said that we are influenced and motivated by Jesus of Nazareth's prophetic zeal.
They also said in their statement that they want to call this issue an emergency of an authentic education considering that basic and fundamental values of the coexistence of humans appear to have been misplaced and forgotten in Mexico.
They expressed that each one of us shares the responsibility for the settlement of the humanitarian crisis that we humans are facing. That includes our relatives, the school, the media, and the masses. They also said that among others, we are the human heroes who are obligated to take on the mission of reproducing a civilization filled with hope and peace.
The bishops of the Mexican Catholic Church also swore to distribute their support and resources for the sake of the victims of femicide and other violence in every part of the country. They will also attempt to assist in rebuilding what has been damaged in their nation.
Lastly, they added that they are calling on all believers of God and the people who want to share their best to do their part on avoiding femicide and other kinds of violence from continuing to develop and spread. They also want to invite each and everyone to recognize the value of women, to give importance to their rights, to make them feel comfortable in our society, and ensuring their independence and wholeness.
