The film version of John Green's successful young adult novel, "The Fault in Our Stars," enjoyed success on the big screen, estimated to garner a total of $50 million in its opening weekend in the U.S. alone. The film features "Divergent" breakout star Shailene Woodley, who portrays the cancer-stricken protagonist Hazel Grace Lancaster, along with actor Ansel Elgort, who plays Augustus Waters, a fellow cancer patient who becomes her love interest throughout the course of the film.

The Fault in Our Stars was predicted to make $20 million to $22 million on Friday with an impressive total of $8.2 million earned in Thursday night showings. Expected sales for Saturday and Sunday are pegged at $17 million and $11 million respectively. Although the opening weekend will probably not match Shailene Woodley's "Divergent," which had $54 million in total sales, the "The Fault in Our Stars" opening is still impressive given that it had just a $12 million budget, much lower than blockbuster movies. The figures from this weekend seem to indicate that TFIOS will end up exceeding the initial forecasts of $35 million to $40 million, according to Variety. Producer Fox gave a more conservative estimate at $25 million.

The tear-jerking romance film about two cancer patients falling in love with each other received massive support from fans of John Green's novel. In addition, producer 20th Century Fox organized an event for fans that featured simulcast interviews with the cast along with a movie screening at 650 theaters across the country for $25 per ticket. "The Fault in Our Stars" received a rating of 82 percent from movie critic website Rotten Tomatoes, while receiving 93 percent from its users. Moreover, the film has received high acclaim for being true to the novel, making it a faithful adaptation. Even author John Green has expressed his approval and of course his fans like it, many of whom have been following the movie version since prior to its release.
