Announcement from the Quintana Roo State

The authorities from the Quintana Roo state had released a public announcement stating a prediction on a smaller volume of sargassum in the Caribbean and the Atlantic until March. The forecast was made by the University of South Florida. The projection on the seaweed in Cancun was made based on the maps and measurements of the educational institution's Laboratory of Optical Oceanography.

In the eastern region of the Lesser Antilles, the total volume of sargassum is still at low levels. This was in comparison with the results from 2015, 2018, and 2019 where it reached its peak.

What Does the Forecasts Reveal?

The forecast on the seaweed in Cancun reveals the Caribbean is expected to witness a moderate volume of sargassum in March. This situation is expected to continue until spring.

According to some reports, the maps with warm colors reveal a huge amount of sargassum. This confirms a significant change since January. This amount of macroalgae in the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea, the Florida Strait had attained a similar volume of 1 million tons in January 2017. It was below the recorded volume in January 2015 at 1.7 million tons, January 2018 at 6.4 million, and January 2019 at 5 million tons.

Announcement from Quintana Roo's Governor

Governor Carlos Joaquín González of the state of Quintana Roo released an announcement. He announced the ARM 'Fluitans' coastal sargacero ship had reached the coast of the Mexican Caribbean.

Maintaining the Cleanliness in Beaches

González announced it will be allowing months in advance Sargasso vessels to operate in case there is a huge macroalgae recharge. This move will help maintain the cleanliness in beaches. Locals and tourists will benefit from this project.

González proudly shared the coastal sargacero ship is the first vessel to be built in the Secretariat of the Navy's shipyard. The project was financed by various municipalities and the Quintana Roo government.

The Coastal Sargacero Ship

The vessel, with a length of 15 meters, has a hydraulic crane. Also, it has a weight capacity of 20 tons.

Additionally, the vessel is the third operational ship of the six. All of the six vessels will be ready for operations this year. All of the six are built in the Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz's Shipyard of Marina No. 3 and Chetumal's Naval Repair Center. They are built by naval personnel.

The Local Community, State Government, and Municipalities of the Federal Land Maritime Zone's Partnership

Governor González shared the Secretary of the Navy, as an agency of the federal government, is accomplishing the collaboration for sargassum care on Quintana Roos beaches. The partnership includes the federal land maritime zone's municipalities, society, the community, and the state government. The governor observed that the collaboration had gained positive results in the short term of the project.
