Mexico Responds to the COVID-19 Crisis: Social Distancing Program and More
There is a chance that Mexico will be having a huge COVID-19 outbreak soon. However, the president of the country believes that everything is still fine, says an article out of the country.
In most of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's recent speeches, he says to Mexicans that they should not be fearing the COVID-19 pandemic despite the thousands of its reported cases in the different parts of the world.
Regardless of the warnings provided by various global health officials, he is continuing to hold political rallies. Also, the Mexican president continues to kiss supporters. Additionally, he continues to encourage citizens to go on shopping trips to help with the country's economy amid global economic stresses.
What are Experts Saying?
According to some experts, the advice given by the Mexican president to its citizens is deadly. Additionally, the policies he is implementing in the past years have become a stage for a potential health crisis in the country.
In the effort to reduce government spending, the administration of López Obrador had lessened the funds allocated for Mexican hospitals and medical centers by millions. The decision had left the country with an insufficient number of physicians, medical equipment, beds, and COVID-19 test kits.
The 2009 Outbreak in Mexico
In 2009, Mexico had been hit hard with a terrible outbreak. H1N1 influenza originated in Mexico before it had spread globally. The illness had taken the lives of thousands.
H1N1 influenza killed 17,000 individuals worldwide. It began to spread across Mexico in 2008. It was initially believed to be a worse case of the regular flu. However, it was officially given the name H1N1 in 2009.
During the outbreak, Mexico employed intense efforts to test thousands of its citizens to determine clusters of infection and prevent its spread and transmission, said the 'czar' of the emergency response of the Mexican government during that time Alejandro Macias. The actions taken by Mexico during that outbreak is similar to the acts conducted by South Korea with their COVID-19 crisis.
For the COVID-19, the actions of the country against the H1N1 influenza outbreak in 2009 is currently non-existent.

What is Mexico Doing amid the Current Global Pandemic Crisis?
The country is rarely testing people for the COVID-19, this may be seen as a possible reason for the low confirmed cases of the country. As of March 26, there is a total of 475 cases of the COVID-19 in Mexico.
People are not restricted to where they go and travel. Last week, there was a large outdoor festival held in Mexico City where thousands attended the event.
Recently, the administration of López Obrador had initiated serious talks about the COVID-19 in the country. The conference resulted in a social distancing program and the suspension of nonessential activities in the country. Some experts are saying that the late reaction of the country to the COVID-19 pandemic could be disastrous.
According to Doctor Francisco Moreno Sánchez, a doctor at the ABC Medical Center in the capital, the COVID-19 cases in the country could get as worst as Italy or more.
