Florida City Commissioner Ted Galatis Apologizes for Racist Use of 'N-Word' During Road Rage Incident
A South Florida city commissioner apologized for shouting the n-word at a woman during a moment of road rage over weekend, saying that he used the racial slur because he felt "threatened."
The incident took place Sunday when a car with two black women and a 16-year-old black boy began honking repeatedly at Wilton Manors Commissioner Ted Galatis in a Publix parking lot, according to a police report obtained by NBC Miami.
Latoya Pinkney said she was driving her car with her sister and teenage son behind Galatis when he came to an abrupt stop and almost caused the two cars to collide. That's when Pinkney said that Galatis got of his vehicle and accused her of following him home.
Pinkney said that Galatis also "began calling her and her passengers 'N*ggers,'" according to the police report. In response, the driver called the police, saying she was upset about the slur and "did not want him to get away with it."
"I never got called that word before," Pinkney said during an interview with NBC Miami.
"I thought he was a drunk man," Pinkney said. "He was looking drunk."
She said that Galatis' wife came out of their home with a knife and yelled at her and her sister.
In response to the allegations, Galatis released an apology and admitted to using the n-word. He said in a statement provided to NBC6 by his wife Donna Galatis that he felt threatened by the driver and the people inside her car. He said he "may have" used the slur "while protecting myself from the immediate threat."
"I apologize for my use of the n-word. It is something I never say," the statement reads. "I offer no excuse other than it was uttered when I was being threatened in front of my own home."
Galatis' wife defended him, telling NBC6 that the other people verbally assaulted her as well, telling her, "White b*tch, I'll slice you up."
Police said no charges have been filed because a crime was not committed.
"What he said was wrong, there's no excuse for saying what he said, but he was feeling threatened on his property," Sgt. Shawn Chadwick said with the Wilton Manors Police Department.
