Mexicans with Diabetes, Hypertension, and Obesity Are at a High Risk of COVID-19 Complications
With the coronavirus putting pressure on the Mexican government and its people by significantly affecting the economy, healthcare, and public safety, the country is burdened by another internal issue. According to an article, the increasing number of deaths from SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, have been affected by the presence of three pre-existing health conditions among the people of Mexico. These three pre-existing health conditions include diabetes, hypertension, and obesity, says the article.
Based on a recent article, Hugo Lopez-Gatell, the deputy health minister of Mexico and the leader of the country's battle against the deadly novel coronavirus, stated that the country is winning against the coronavirus with the hope of reopening some sectors of the government soon. However, Lopez-Gatell stated that there could be a possibility of seasonal illness in October, says the article.
Diabetes
According to an article, diabetes is one of the top causes of death in Mexico.
Based on the data from WHO, 23,100 Mexican males who are age 30 to 69 died from diabetes while 22,000 Mexican females who are in the same age bracket had died from the illness. Also, 17,600 Mexican males who are 70 years old and above have died from diabetes. Moreover, 24,300 Mexican females who are in the same age bracket have died from the same illness. This information is based on the World Health Organization's country profiles for 2016.
Diabetes is a chronic illness that causes the body's sugar levels to escalate, says an article.
According to an article, a person with diabetes will be having difficulties battling the coronavirus infection because diabetes slows the body's ability to heal itself.
Hypertension
According to an article, 22.8 percent of the people of Mexico are suffering from hypertension.
Those who have hypertension are at a higher risk of getting complications if they contract the novel coronavirus.
Based on an article, there are many possible seen causes of how hypertension can worsen the situation of those who had contracted the novel coronavirus. The article stated that one possible effect of hypertension to those who contracted COVID-19 is the weakened immune system that makes it difficult for the body to fight the illness. Another possible reason why hypertension can contribute to a worsened case of COVID-19 is the effects of high blood pressure drugs on the body's fight against the deadly illness, says the article.

Obesity
According to an article, one out of three Mexican adults are obese.
According to an article, people who are obese are those who have a body mass index, also known as BMI, of 30.
The article also states that those who are obese will have more difficulty in battling the deadly novel coronavirus if they are obese due to the excess fat in their body. The excess fat gives less space for the lungs to provide more oxygen to the body as it battles the infection.
