Kany García Encourages Puerto Ricans to Support Trans Rights More Than Ever Amid the Pandemic
Last week, the popstar urged the public to send donations to the local non-profit organization, True Self Foundation through a Facebook video. The group supported trans and non-binary rights through legal grants for affirmation processes or financial aid with regards to gender identities.
Trans community more vulnerable during the crisis
In the clip that she posted on her social media, García explained that during the crisis the country was facing and the quarantine measures to prevent further transmission, trans people are more vulnerable than other minority groups in the nation to lose their jobs.
García believed that most of the members of the LGBTQIA+ community in Latin America, and in Puerto Rico especially, were given the most scrutiny and judgement during employment. Now, during the coronavirus pandemic, she said that "those people are not only without work, but they don't have anything to eat, either."
She also acknowledged the growing crime rate against trans people in Puerto Rico, so much so that fear has become a part of their daily lives.
In the recent four months, five trans people are recorded to have been killed in the country, a staggering 50% of the LGBTQIA+ killings in the past fifteen months.
As such, the True Self Foundation aimed to raise funds to be able to support the community through donations, which will be directed to purchase of food and other necessary supplies for the trans people.

Calling for donations
After coming out in 2016 with her girlfriend and personal trainer Jocelyn Troche, García explained that apart from launching her own career in music, she thought about being a role model for the queer Latinx youth.
García shared in an Instagram post that the good must not be hidden. "If something does not suffer from sin, it is love."
In an interview with Rolling Stone, she said that the True Self Foundation served to help trans people access assistance, both psychological and legal, with no charge. She added, "To be a public figure and part of this foundation seems vital."
Earlier this month García serenaded viewers who tuned in to her Billboard Live At-Home Concert series, teaming up with MusicCares to raise funds for musicians who were forced to cancel shows and tours because of the pandemic.
After her medley of performances and of acoustic versions of "Alguien", "Que Te Vaya Mal", and "Que Viva la Gente", García expressed her utmost regards to the organizations who allowed her to use her platform for positive change.
In Particular, she thanked Billboard after being given the opportunity to help, connect, and give music to people that were needed so much during the troubled time.
"The coronavirus pandemic impacted all of us. ...We won't be onstage for a while and MusicCares helps those that work in our industry," she said. In reference to the donations, she added that these would be allocated for the people working in the music industry like the stage managers, producers, directors, musicians.
