Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich issued a cease-and-desist letter on Friday to Glendale-based Clean Air EXP advertised by a Phoenix church for alleged false advertising that claims it can 'purify' coronavirus from the air.

Fox News reported the Phoenix church, Dream City Church, was also sent a similar letter.

The cease-and-desist order is for advertisements, "suggesting that Clean Air EXP air purification solution eliminates COVID-19 until Clean Air EXP can provide scientific evidence for such representations".

The advertisements said the air purification systems could neutralize coronavirus in the air in 10 minutes.

Brnovich said businesses could not give consumers misleading advertisements, especially when it comes to health issues as serious as COVID-19. He stressed that there won't be tolerance for "companies or individuals attempting to deceive or exploit the public during this public health crisis."

Brnovich wrote in his letter to Clean Air EXP, "The AGO is aware of no scientific research or public health authority that has certified any air treatment product as a means of universally preventing COVID-19 infections at all or any distance."

The church said Clean Air EXP "kills 99 percent of COVID" and that "when you come into [the church's] auditorium, 99 percent of COVID is gone."

The Hill reported the megachurch, where President Trump held a campaign rally earlier this week, was told by the attorney general that its statements on Clean Air EXP have "no scientific evidence" and such "misrepresentation and false promise" is punishable by $10,000 per violation.

The Hill also reported that during Trumps' rally at the church on Tuesday, most of the 3,000 people attending were not even wearing masks. On the same day, Arizona set a record of 3,600 new cases of the virus.

Even though the numbers for coronavirus cases have spiked, Governor Doug Ducey did not require Arizonians the use of masks when out in public. Still, he gave the local governments the decision to do what they think works for their constituents.

"We're going to be stronger than ever before, and it's going to be soon," Trump told the crowd of people who went to the rally.

He also downplayed the severity of the pandemic, saying Democrats are making efforts to keep the country shut down and closed "because they'd love those numbers not to be good."

Brnovich's letters are expected to be complied with by both Dream City Church and Clean Air EXP until Monday.

According to an ABC News report, Clean Air EXP posted a statement on its website and said it used a third-party certified lab on the "best coronavirus surrogates available" and found 99.99% elimination in their patented technology.

Brnovich clarified that the company only tested the product on a virus that causes the common cold and not coronavirus.

"We do not, however, eliminate COVID-19 at this time," the company said.

Clean Air EXP expressed hope that the confusion brought by the incident will be alleviated.

Arizona now has one of the worst outbreaks in the U.S. as it reported 66,000 confirmed coronavirus cases and also held a higher infection per capita than any country in Europe, according to Fox News.
