When Naya Rivera was first declared missing in Lake Piru, stories of the Southern California lake's tragic history resurfaced. Now that the Glee actress has officially been declared dead, she becomes another life taken by the notorious lake.

"People drown in California lakes every year," Ventura County Sheriff's Office spokesman, Captain Eric Buschow, tells In Touch Weekly. He pointed out that there are "plenty of currents" in Lake Piru, a Ventura summer hotspot.

Lake Piru's former parks and recreation services manager Douglas West himself had heard about a dozen drownings in his 23 years. He said most of the lake's victims are inexperienced swimmers who did not wear life jackets and overestimated their abilities or swam in prohibited areas, reported Los Angeles Times in a September 2000 article.

This baffles West and other park officials. "We don't understand why someone would jump out of a boat into the water if they didn't know how to swim," he said.

In a Page Six report, West emphasized the need to wear personal flotation devices for swimmers, "whether they know how to swim or not."

After a drowning of somebody in 1997, officials suspected that the wind gusts and deep columns of cold water on the lake could quickly overtake swimmers. Other than that, the lake can also be up to 160 feet deep, depending on the time of year.

The following have fallen victim to the lake:

Eric Cruz. The 25-year-old Van Nuys resident drowned only 10 feet from the shore. His drowning happened on a sunny day in September 2000 when winds were calm at Lake Piru.

He decided to swim the short distance between his radio-controlled model boat, but he struggled just near his boat and started to panic, witnesses said. Divers retrieved his body an hour later. The body was found on the floor of the lake Tuesday afternoon.

Jesus Danilo Carranza. In August 1994, 27-year-old Carranza of North Hollywood drowned while on an outing with his family. He drowned despite wearing a life jacket.

Liborio Dominguez. In July 1997, Dominguez of Long Beach drowned in an attempt to rescue his young daughter. The girl was saved, but her father's body was not found until days later.

Isidro Castillo. In September 1997, Castillo was out with his girlfriend when he had problems while swimming. He called for his girlfriend to throw him a buoy, but the woman did not get the flotation device to him. His body was found a day later.

Ulises Anthony Mendoza. Also, in September 1997, rescue workers also found the body of the 30-year-old Port Hueneme resident. He was last seen struggling while swimming with his family near their boat.

Anthony Raymond Caladara. He was found drowned near a dock in February 1998. The details surrounding his death are not known.

Vy Xuan Dang. In June 1998, the body of the 30-year-old from Garden Grove was found by a park ranger after he disappeared while swimming with his family on that year's Memorial Day Weekend.

Rivera is now part of the Lake Piru's tragic history. In a twist of fate, the actress shared a cryptic message about death on social media.

"No matter the year, circumstance, or strifes, every day you're alive is a blessing. Make the most of today and every day you are given. Tomorrow is not promised."
