Apple said it will be previewing a selection of new emojis that will be on the free software update for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch.

The software update comes this fall. Apple usually gives new emojis after releasing new operating systems around the same time, the Business Insider reported.

In celebration of World Emoji Day, Apple revealed new emoji designs like bubble tea, boomerang, transgender symbol, and more. People will very likely look for these emojis on iOS and iPadOS 14.1 or 14.2, and on macOS Big Sur versions 11 and 12.

The new emojis are part of the Emoji 13 update, said Mac Rumors. They were able to compile a list of the update's emoji inclusions.

Emoji 13 will include the following emojis related to people and body parts:

  • Smiling Face with Tear
  • Disguised Face
  • Ninja
  • Person in Tuxedo, Woman in Tuxedo
  • Person with Veil, Man with Veil
  • Woman Feeding Baby, Person Feeding Baby, Man Feeding Baby
  • Mx. Claus
  • People Hugging
  • Pinched fingers
  • Anatomical Heart, Lungs

The update will also include animals like bisons, mammoths, polar bears and cockroaches. Food will also be in the set as Fondue, Bell Pepper, Olive and Blueberries are part of Emoji 13.

Those who are into sewing or gardening will also be happy to know that there will be a design for both sewing needle and potted plant. If there are any musicians who are not seeing their instrument in the current set of emojis, then maybe the addition of a long drum and accordion is just what they're waiting for.

The update will also have 55 gender and skin-tone variants. Gender-inclusive emojis will also be seen in the update. Emojipedia now has the design previews shared by Apple and the new emojis listed above can be seen on the Emojipedia website.

Adopting Unicode 13

At some point in 2020, Apple will start following the new Unicode 13 emoji characters. They introduced the Unicode 12 emojis for the iOS 13.2 update released last October.

New emojis aren't expected in 2021 as there will be a delay with Emoji 14 after the Emoji 13 update. The 14 version will have to be released six months later, meaning it can't be added to smartphones until 2022.

The update will also give users new ways of expressing themselves as new hairstyles and enhancements were made. Now, there are 11 new hairstyles and 19 new headwear designs.

Most Popular Emojis

As the early days of the coronavirus pandemic trickled in, people found it hard to express themselves in words. The good thing was technology offered a new way to tell others how we feel through emojis.

In a report from CNN, it was revealed that the following emojis were most used on Twitter.

  1. Face with Tears of Joy
  2. Loudly Crying Face
  3. Pleading Face
  4. Rolling On the Floor Laughing
  5. Red Heart
  6. Sparkles
  7. Smiling Face with Heart Eyes
  8. Folded Hands
  9. Smiling Face with Smiling Eyes
  10. Smiling Face with Hearts

The report noted that the top three emojis reflect what social media was like during the early days of the pandemic. With an unseen enemy, the report said it was fortunate that everyone managed to keep it relatively positive.
