Important Things You Need to Know About the Next Stimulus
Republican and Democratic lawmakers returned to the Capitol Hill this week, and their goal is to craft and pass the next stimulus bill.
Republican and Democratic lawmakers may have different ideas on what should be in the next stimulus bill. However, both parties seemed to agree that many Americans need another stimulus check to help them bounce back due to the global pandemic.
President Donald Trump has already said he was in favor of sending more payments to Americans. It can be remembered that the Democratic-led bill HEROES Act called for another round of checks amounting to $1,200 per family member and up to $6,000 per household, according to a published article of NBC News.
However, Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he would like to bring the threshold to $40,000 to qualify for the next round. This means that this will reduce the number of Americans, who would be eligible for the next stimulus.
Republicans and Democrats seek to find a middle ground on the estimated $3 trillion for the proposed HEROES Act, which also includes the $1 trillion that McConnel has said the federal government should target in the next package.
Meanwhile, there are also other ways on how to help the country's failing economy. It could be through the enhanced unemployment benefits, back to work bonuses, business loans, COVID-19 testing, more Personal Protective Equipment, and more.
Mark Mazur, director of the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center, said Republican and Democratic lawmakers seem to want to have the next stimulus checks, but its provisions can only be determined during the last-minute negotiations.
McConnell suggested to have a $40,000 income cap in order to target the low-income, who have been the hardest hit by the pandemic. That pertains specifically to the African-Americans and Latinos in the country.
According to a study from the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center, even though the rollout of the previous stimulus check has been successful in some ways, there were still significant disparities by income, race, ethnicity, and family citizenship in terms of who received the money.
It was also reported that African-Americans and Latinos were less likely to receive the previous stimulus checks because of the provisions stated in the CARES Act. If only Republican and Democratic lawmakers will meet and decide to adapt the HEROES Act, then there's a big chance that even the undocumented paying the taxes can receive the next stimulus.
Another good news is that the payment could reach more people this time since they already knew the problems in the initial distribution of checks. The next stimulus will now be loaded on debit cards.
Congress will not be in session beginning August 10 as each party will hold their national convention for the upcoming 2020 U.S. presidential election.
