Tracy Morgan Car Crash Update: Truck Driver Pleads Not Guilty in Accident Case That Critically Injured the '30 Rock' Star
Since getting charged with one count of death by auto and four counts of assault by auto, Kevin Roper, the truck driver who hit Tracy Morgan amidst a six-vehicle car crash, has pled not guilty at an initial court appearance on Wednesday, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Roper, 35, turned himself in on Sunday and the judge kept his bail at $50,000.
CNN reports that Roper did not have much to say during his court appearance at Middlesex County Superior Court in New Jersey.
Roper arrived in court with his defense lawyer David Glassman, who announced the not guilty plea to the court.
"We enter a not guilty plea across the board obviously -- the fatality and the remaining counts of assault by auto," said Glassman to the court.
In contrast to Roper's silence, Superior Court Judge Bradley Ferencz had plenty to say following Roper's plea.
Ferencz reportedly advised Roper to inform his lawyer of his whereabouts at all times. Ferencz urged Roper to "be in contact."
"Let me just give you a caution, sir. You make sure your lawyer knows exactly where you are. You go anywhere, you drive anywhere, you go across country somewhere else, you need to be in contact. You understand that?" Ferencz warned.
According to CNN, Roper responded, "Yes sir."
Following the fatal crash on Saturday, reports surfaced that Roper was sleep deprived during the night of the accident.
It is unclear how sleep deprivation was determined but reports claim that Roper had been awake for more than 24 hours and failed to notice the traffic and Morgan's car in front of him.
If sleep deprivation is in fact confirmed to be the cause, Roper may be convicted.
CNN reports that, under Jersey law, a driver can be convicted if there's proof he had been without sleep for 24 hours when the accident occurred.
If Roper is convicted, he could face between five to 10 years in prison.
