Trump Issues Presidential Disaster Declaration for California
President Donald Trump issued a Disaster Declaration on Saturday for California after wildfires burned nearly one million acres of land in just one week. The declaration will provide funds to the state.
California has been hit by 585 wildfires and two of which are in the top 10 largest in the state's history. These wildfires have burned nearly 1 million acres of land in California. According to Cal Fire, LNU Lightning Complex has burned 314,207 acres while the SCU Lightning Complex had burned 291,968 acres.
This situation has led Pres. Trump to issue a disaster declaration on Saturday. The action of Pres. Trump will provide funding to help the state and the local governments with their emergency response. This will also make support for counseling, unemployment assistance, and housing available to affected people.
California Governor Gavi Newsom said "Thank you to the President for your partnership and granting this urgent Major Disaster Declaration. California is battling two of the largest fires in our history and has seen nearly 600 new fires in the last week caused by dry lightning strikes. These are unprecedented times and conditions, but California is strong - we will get through this."
Moreover, there are now roughly 13,700 firefighters who are working to contain the wildfires and at least 10 states have sent ground and air support according to a published article in Fox News. The wildfires continue to devastate the state.
The National Weather Service already issued a red flag warning from Sunday morning to Monday evening for the San Francisco Bay Area and Central Coast because the wildfires do not appear to show any signs of slowing down.
The agency warned and said, "These erratic gusty outflow winds can lead to potentially dangerous and unpredictable fire behavior on existing wildfires while additional lightning strikes may result in new wildfire starts."
Fire Protection Chief Thom Porter and California Department of Forestry warned also that the state will continue to fight the wildfires in the next couple of nights.
