A total of 222 Golden Retrievers gathered in Scotland for the annual Guisachan Gathering last July. The number beats the previous record of 188 from when the gathering was first held in 2006.

According to the Daily Mail, the dog gathering was organized by the Golden Retriever Club of Scotland (GRSC) and was headed by Jim Richardson. Golden retrievers from as far as Hawaii gathered to celebrate the breed at the Guisachan House, near Beauly in the Highlands of Scotland.

The Guisachan House is the breed's ancestral home, says GRSC in its official website. The home was the Highland Estate of Dudley Coutts Marjoribanks, later known as Lord Tweedmouth - developer of the breed. Tweedmouth started developing the breed in the year 1860. And while the mansion is now deserted, it did not stop over 200 golden retrievers to visit the site.

The Guisachan Gathering early this summer included fun activities for owners and their dogs. The activities included games like tug of war, practiced dog shows, sessions of playing fetch and a parade, reoprts The Examiner. Although the gathering was somewhat overwhelming, Richardson says that it was all worthwhile.

"The last three months of planning were a bit manic, but it was all worthwhile. I had a PA system and I was shouting at the owners 'Get out! Get out of the photo!'" he said in a Daily Mail report.

According to the Christian Post, Golden Retrievers were named as such because of their color and ability to retrieve duck and bird games unharmed as gundogs. Golden retrievers are one of the most popular dog breeds for families around the world. They are the third most popular dog breed in the United States, the fifth most popular in Australia and the eight most popular in the United Kingdom.
