Arizona Church Shooting: Gunman Fatally Shoots Catholic Priest, Injures Another in Phoenix
Arizona police are searching for the person(s) that shot and killed a priest inside of a Phoenix church Wednesday night. Another priest was also injured in what authorities believe was a botched burglary.
The Rev. Kenneth Walker, 29, was fatally shot, while the Rev. Joseph Terra, 56, is currently in critical condition, said police and church officials.
Around 9 p.m. MST on Wednesday, Rev. Terra called 911 from the Mater Misericordiae "Mother of Mercy: Mission Catholic Church, to report a burglary, said Phoenix Police Department Sgt. Steve Martos. However, it remains unclear whether Terra made the phone call before or after he was injured.
"That particular individual was able to call police, call 911, direct officers to this location, however, was not able to provide too much information as to what actually occurred. We are hoping once that individual receives treatment and is able to pull through that we can gather some more information," Martos said, according to AZFamily.com.
When police arrived on the scene, they found both of the priests badly injured, while Walker, who was ordained a priest two years ago, died at the hospital.
Officials say that a green 2003 Mazda Tribute that was stolen from church property was found abandoned.
In regard to the shooting, the Catholic Diocese of Phoenix issued the following statement Thursday morning, according to CNN:
"We are stunned and deeply saddened to learn of the tragic assault perpetrated last night against Fr. Joseph Terra and Fr. Kenneth Walker, two religious order priests who belong to the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter.
Fr. Walker's life was taken. Fr. Terra remains in critical condition but stable.
The reported attack occurred at Mater Misericordiae Mission in Phoenix.
The police are still gathering information and trying to sort through the details of this senseless act of violence. We ask that people offer prayers for both priests, the religious community, their families and the parish.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen."
