Lawmakers Are Anxious to Vote For Stimulus Legislation Before Election
Lawmakers from the House of Representatives are planning to vote on some stimulus legislation next week. This is amid the tension going on in Congress.
More lawmakers are getting anxious to vote for a new stimulus package in any form as early as next week. This now divides the Democratic-dominated Congress. Most of them wanted to vote stimulus legislation even without reaching a deal.
The Democratic lawmakers who are in a tight race in their home state have long been asking for any form of stimulus they can vote for before they go home to focus on their campaigns. Lawmakers are afraid that voters would penalize them for not voting on a stimulus bill.
Most Democratic lawmakers are anxious and they pressure House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to bring a stimulus bill next week. However, it is still not clear if Nancy Pelosi would bring any forms of stimulus legislation before the month ends even if she already said that a deal will be reached.
However, the tension within the rank of Democrats has led most of their members clamor and plan to vote on stimulus legislation even without reaching a deal next week. Lawmakers do not want to go home without bringing the good news about the stimulus bill.
Rep. John Larson, former head of the Democratic Caucus, said "There's an awful lot of concern amongst members that things be done," He also added that there is pressure emerging in different forms for new stimulus legislation that lawmakers are asking.
Last week, a bipartisan group Problem Solver Caucus introduced their own version of a stimulus package worth roughly $1.5 trillion. The group expected that leaders will act on it immediately. They are expecting that lawmakers would act on it next week or before they leave Washington.
In fact, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer aired a rare public split with Pelosi on Wednesday., He said in no uncertain terms that Democrats should vote on a partisan relief package before the chamber leaves Washington next week even if there's no deal with the White House which Pelosi has long resisted in this strategy.
Hoyer said "I think we ought to be taking up COVID-19 legislation before we leave here, and I don't think we ought to wait. People are really hurting," Now that the campaign period nears, more Democrats are asking Pelosi to act on the new stimulus package.
Complicating the debate for the Democrats, rank-and-file lawmakers have been all over the board when it comes to specific strategies for pressuring Republicans to return to the negotiating table - and providing themselves political cover as they return home to voters crushed by the health and economic devastation caused by the deadly pandemic, according to a published report in The Hill.
Even Democratic Rep. Pete Aguilar from California, who is a leading figure in the New Democrat Coalition, is one of the lawmakers pressuring the House to vote for a new stimulus package in the next eight days. Another Democratic Representative also said that lawmakers within their rank are anxious as the days progressed without a stimulus bill to vote for.
