Avoid These 3 Worst Vacation Spots in South America At All Costs
South America does have some great places to visit but, just like any other region, it also has some of the worst vacation spots.
Some countries in South America also hold both the best and worst vacation spots.
Vacationing is no joke. After so much work on your hands, it pays to kick back and go to new places every once in a while.
Before you plan on taking a few days off in South America, check this list of some of the worst vacation spots in the region:
La Paz, Bolivia
Just like other cities in South America, La Paz also sees its occasional protests that turn ugly fast.
On top of that, Truly Traveled said some common problems that tourists experience in the country are pickpocketing and express kidnapping. But the latter has been expressed a little less in the past years.
Areas like Plaza Isabel La Católica, Plaza del Estudiante and Plaza San Francisco have a reputation with kidnappings. Even though the crime is getting less and less common these days, it might not hurt to exercise a bit more caution.
Two Sundowners added that while there are parts of the country to like, you can't do a lot of things due to the city's altitude. They said their experience with La Paz was the "most 'unusual' experience" because it seemed "the most adventurous."
If you're a vegetarian, getting food options was also hard to do since there were no supermarkets.
Caracas, Venezuela
Caracas is not only part of the dangerous places to visit it South America. Venezuela itself is the most dangerous place to visit, according to Travelling Lifestyle.
It has a Global Peace Index (GPI) score of 2.671, ranking the 144th overall. It also has the second highest murder rate in the world.
Political instability in the country has resulted in high levels in violence and increased crime rates.
Petty crimes like muggings and theft are common, said MapQuest. There are also murders by firearms and kidnappings out on the streets.
The most alarming part of this is there are barely safe locations in Caracas. Well-organized groups easily pickpocket or rob even in crowded parks, streets and transport systems.
It's not the most desirable place for tourists who just want to relax and enjoy the sights.
Cusco, Peru
Cusco isn't as dangerous as some of the other places in South America, but it can still turn into a bad vacation.
Common sense will come in handy if you're trying to avoid trouble in South America, as Peru isn't really one of the safest travel options in the world.
Pickpocketing and scamming aren't so common, but Cusco can become unpleasant once protests start. Protests can happen often and they turn violent quickly.
A terrorist group known as the Shining Path can also be a potential problem. The group is known to assault trekkers heading out to Espirity Pampa in Cusco.
Not a lot of people have negative feelings about Cusco. But if you're trying to travel on a budget, Two Sundowners also said it may not be the best choice to travel there.
They said the region was too focused on tourism, making travel arrangements exhausting.
Everyone offers you something to buy or try.
The locals actually aren't to blame for this; they grew used to building their livelihood around tourism. It's how they make ends meet anyway.
