Moderna To Request Emergency Authorization For Its Vaccine After Positive Trial Results.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently granted emergency use authorization to Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine and next on the line is Moderna's vaccine that will soon have its EAU.

The American biotechnology committed that it will distribute six million doses upon FDA's approval.

Moderna Commits To Distribute Six Million Vaccines

Moderna said that its vaccine, based on the last stage of the human clinical trial, is nearly 95 percent effective for those who have developed COVID-19 symptoms while 100 percent effective against those who have developed severe cases, according to an article published in Science Mag.

The American biotechnology company is just waiting for the FDA's emergency use authorization that they expected to be granted this week.

On Monday, the U.S. officials said that they are planning to ship six million doses of Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine once it gets EAU from the U.S. FDA.

According to CNBC, Gen. Gustave Perna who is in charge of logistics for Operation Warp Speed, the White House's COVID-19 vaccine program, said that the medical supply company McKesson will receive doses of the Moderna vaccine for packaging and will distribute to 3,285 sites.

Perna also added that UPS and FedEx have been tasked with getting the vaccine doses to their final locations.

This includes the transportation of the vaccine with appropriate storage. If these vaccines will not be transported well, their efficacy will be affected.

When Will Moderna Will Have Its EAU?

According to a report in The Hill, the earliest day that Moderna could have its emergency use authorization from the U.S. FDA could be Friday.

That is one week after Pfizer received its emergency use authorization from the regulatory body,

Moderna's vaccine used the same technology as Pfizer. The only difference is the time that the second dose will be administered.

Pfizer's second shot will be given three weeks after the first shot while Moderna's second shot is given four weeks after.

That is the reason why Operation Warp Speed will provide a COVID-19 vaccine kit that includes what type of vaccine was given to a person and when will be his or her second shot. The vaccine will not be effective without the second shot.

Head of Operation Warp Speed Released Statement on COVID-19 Vaccines

Dr. Moncef Slaoui, head of Operation Warp Speed, said on Monday that 20 million Americans are expected to be immunized before the year ends.

She also added that 100 million doses are expected to be injected by the end of February 2021.

Moreover, the U.S. government is currently planning on holding back on doses to ensure that people get the second dose they need.

Slaoui also stated that the government may stop holding back doses in January or February once they see "things are rolling perfectly."
