Convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein's last known cellmate reportedly died from the coronavirus.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) confirmed the news of his cellmate's death on Monday.

Efrain Reyes was found "unresponsive lying on a bed" on November 27 at his mother's apartment in New York, an NYPD spokesman told Daily Caller.

Sergeant Edward Riley of the NYPD also said the EMS responded and performed CPR on Epstein's 51-year-old cellmate, but was later pronounced dead.

A medical examiner has not yet determined the cause of death. However, Reyes suffered from both heart problems and diabetes that could have resulted in more severe coronavirus.

Reyes' niece, Angelique Lopez, also noted that her uncle was coughing more than usual when he was released last April.

Daily Mail said in its report that Reyes was diagnosed with the coronavirus earlier this year while serving a drug trafficking sentence at the Queens Detention Facility.

He was transferred to Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) in August 2019 before his cellmate Epstein took his own life by hanging.

Reyes previously pled guilty to the drug charges, reported Fox News.

Reyes Contracted Coronavirus in Prison

After Epstein's death, FBI agents questioned Reyes about what he'd seen beforehand, like if the notorious sex offender seemed suicidal.

Lopez told New York Daily News that he was asked about possible indications that Epstein would commit suicide, and his uncle cooperated.

"[Epstein] liked to read a lot and he kept to himself... My uncle said he was a good cellmate," Lopez said.

She said his uncle also described Epstein as someone who "wasn't a problem starter or too loud."

Epstein Was Allegedly Mistreated in Prison

According to Lopez, her uncle told stories about how corrections officers often mistreated Epstein at MCC.

She added that the convicted sex offender was extorted by other inmates who knew about Epstein's massive fortune and wanted to get their hands on some of it.

Despite knowing this, Reyes chose to keep the information from security workers who questioned him about Epstein's suicide. Lopez said her uncle was worried that the MCC workers would lash out at him.

"He was worried if they told them what they did to Epstein he was worried it would follow him and affect him negatively," Lopez said.

Reyes allegedly told all of this information to his niece during his final days. As told by his uncle, Lopez noted that Epstein was on suicide watch, "very depressed," and said that "he didn't want to live anymore."

An MCC inmate also recalled Epstein saying he would kill himself because "the government is trying to kill him anyway."

According to Daily Caller, the jail where Reyes caught COVID-19 was already overrun by the virus early into the pandemic. Reyes also reportedly cried when he told his family that he caught COVID-19.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Southern District of New York, and the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) have yet to comment on the story.
