Adventurers Find Dead Body Inside Freezer of 'Haunted' House in South Carolina
A group of adventurers visited what they believed is a haunted house in South Carolina over the weekend and discovered a dead body inside the home's freezer.
According to an Oxygen report, eight people were riding four-wheelers near an abandoned home in Norway on Sunday when they decided to go inside the abandoned local house.
The group noticed a foul smell upon entering the establishment. One group member then opened a deep freezer inside the "haunted" house and found a decomposing body wearing jeans and socks.
Crime Online reported that it is unclear when the group had contacted authorities to respond to their gruesome discovery. However, Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office is already investigating the person's death that the group found in the establishment.
A coroner has yet to make an identification of the decomposing body. Due to the body's current state, investigators do not yet know the gender of the dead person.
Madison Chiders, one of the individuals who discovered the dead body, said it was horrifying and could not tell if it was a person due to the decomposed state of the body, which has been there a long time. She added that there were maggots everywhere.
'Haunted' House With Dead Body Engulfed in Flames
The abandoned home in Norway was burned down early Tuesday morning or two days after the dead body was found, to which the Orangeburg County Fire Department responded. Authorities said the incident is suspicious.
Orangeburg County firefighters have not yet determined the cause of the fire in the vacant house. Deputies say the house was determined a crime scene and was turned over to investigators and county coroner for further probing.
The property owner was notified and showed to be cooperating with investigators involved in the case. The previous tenant of the house, Ron Philips, said that his family lived in that house for many years and they are devastated by the news, according to a WLTX News 19 report.
"My daughter grew up out there and it really has affected her to know that somebody would come out there and do such a thing as dispose a body in the old freezer on the back porch," Philips said in a report.
He noted that the incident is just a terrible thing. Philips said that he still kept several belongings at the house after moving out, with the property owner's permission. However, he added that he had not visited the vacant home in over a year.
The freezer, which contained the decomposing body, previously belonged to his family, he said. When asked about the home's reputation being haunted, he said that there were some voices in the house, and it has been like that for years.
"It wasn't like it was haunted no, not haunted, but the rocking chair upstairs used to rock by itself in the middle of the night sometimes," he noted in a report.
Philips believed that it had "some spirit about it" and "that's the way I put it."
