Voting rights bill passed by House Democrats advances to Senate even with unanimous GOP or Republican opposition. The passing of the said bill will mark the most significant change in the United States' election law the new generation will witness.

Also known as House Resolution 1, Fox 23 noted that the bill has won with a vote of 220-210 and touches the virtual and every aspect of election or electoral process, that will provide more accurate and verified results of the votes from a certain area. Vox added that the sweeping democracy bill has been on top of the list since the House Democrats got their first majority during the midterms.

Voting Rights Bill's Effects

Former President Donald Trump has repeatedlyclaimed that the 2020 election was stolen from him by President Joe Biden. U.S. News and World Report noted that the light of the bill enters as this bill is powerful enough to eradicate the voting rights restrictions that are advancing in Republican-controlled statehouses across the United States. However, the bill still faces an indefinite fate to the Democratic-controlled Senate because it has a slim chance of passing unless it is redesigned to change the procedural rules that permit the Republicans to block its passing.

Moreover, Vox also noted that the said bill has key points or components that push for a national system for automatic voter registration. The bill also demands transparency requirements for political advertising and establishes redistricting commissions that will end partisan gerrymandering.

As defined by Britannica, gerrymandering in U.S. politics is the practice of drawing boundaries of electoral districts, which, in a way, grants a political party an unfair advantage over their rivals or even messes with the voting powers of the members of the ethnic or linguistic minority groups.

Fox 23 mentioned Representative Nikema Williams from the Georgia district, saying that the bill "will put to stop at the voter suppression that we're seeing debated right now." U.S News and World Report added that the outcomes in the passing are noteworthy since the idea of one person equals one vote is highlighted and the efforts of President Joe Biden's current administration's willingness to voice out and fight for their priorities.

Republicans on Voting Rights Bill

Meanwhile, Republicans are expressing their opposition against the said bill. "Democrats want to use their razor-thin majority not to pass bills to earn voters' trust, but to ensure they don't lose more seats in the next election," House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said.

Vox also mentioned that the Voting Rights bill is still untested in the Senate as Representative John Sarbanes mentioned that "if Mitch McConnell is not willing to provide 10 Republicans to support this landmark reform, I think Democrats are going to step back and reevaluate the situation."
