Two people died, and 13 people were injured in a Chicago shooting early Sunday, according to authorities. Reports said the victims were attending a party of a towing company in Chicago's Park Manor neighborhood when the gunshots were fired before dawn Sunday.

The Associated Press reported that seven of the injured victims were brought to hospitals in critical conditions, while others were brought to hospitals by their acquaintances or went on their own.

Chicago Shooting Victims

The initial record showed that there were only 10 people hurt in the shooting. But police later raised the number of victims to 12 and then 15 with two deaths. Police further noted that those shots were between 20 and 44 years old.

One of the victims, who died, was a woman who was shot in the head and discovered by authorities outside the building. A man was also found dead inside a back room.

The Cook County medical examiner's office identified them as Rayneesha Dotson, 30; and Lionel Darling, 39. Both of them were pronounced dead at 4:55 a.m. at the scene.

Unfortunately, authorities have yet to make any arrests as of Sunday afternoon. But they were able to recover four guns at the scene.

"Detectives are really just getting started," said Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown, adding that they still have not figured out the celebration associated with the "pop-up party."

Brown further noted that they were still trying to follow-up on leads to determine the possible motive. But a police report said the shooting might have been gang-related.

Chicago Police Shooting

Meanwhile, a Chicago police officer was shot in the face at a police department's parking lot in the city's 6th District on Sunday afternoon, Fox News reported.

Brown confirmed the shooting in a series of tweets, adding that the sergeant sustained a small wound to the chin. He further noted that the sergeant was brought to a local hospital in "good condition."

"I'm visiting the sergeant at the hospital, who is recovering in good spirits," Brown tweeted.

Brown also said that their officers show a high resiliency level and place themselves in danger every day, whether they are simply standing in their own parking lot or responding to a call. No arrest has been made yet as detectives continue to investigate the shooting incident.

Brown noted that the sergeant was the 13th Chicago Police Department (CPD) officer to be shot this year, noting that in 2020, 79 police officers were shot.

Chicago Crime Rate

ABC7 reported that more than 700 homicides and 4,000 shootings were recorded in Chicago last year. CPD also reported that there was an uptick with a record of nearly 300 percent of violence against their officers. Authorities blamed many of those killings on rival gangs' disputes.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot urged Chicago's residents to support the city's investigation on the Sunday shooting that victimized 15 people so that justice can be served "for the mothers who will never hear their child's voice again, and the children who will grow up without a parent."
