Vice president Kamala Harris let out a laugh after answering "not today" to a reporter, who asked her if she had plans to visit the U.S.-Mexico border.

The vice president was taking questions from reporters outside of Air Force One at the Jacksonville International Airport on Monday when she was asked if she would visit the southern border amid a surge in illegal immigration.

Kamala Harris responded with a "not today" statement before laughing. She then said she had visited "before" and would probably go back, Fox News reported.

Harris' response, which was shown on a video posted on social media, earned backlash from people disappointed about her reaction to a serious question that tackles the growing immigration crisis.

Kamala Harris on Border

Daily Caller posted on its Twitter account a video of Harris who laughed while responding to the question.

The recent surge in the U.S.-Mexico border is record-breaking, acting as the first crisis the Biden administration has to face along with housing the illegal immigrants.

Representative Henry Cuellar provided photos inside a Customs and Border Protection migrant facility in Texas to select media outlets, intending to raise awareness of the true events on the border.

Cuellar noted that the "eight" pods in the migrant facility have a 260-person occupancy. However, one pod has more than 400 unaccompanied male minors.

The question of Harris' plans on visiting the border follows the administration restriction on media personnel to have access to the facilities of migrant children.

It can be remembered that the White House insisted that the influx of migrant children on the border is not a crisis.

"It is not enough for the members of the Senate to see what is happening," said Senator Ted Cruz when he sent a letter to President Joe Biden. Cruz also requested to allow media personnel to be allowed in joining them when they visited the border. However, the administration refused and argued about the COVID-19 protocols.

"Denying the press the ability to observe, film, and report on the conditions at the border is not openness or transparency," said Cruz in his letter.

Cruz added that the American people should know the real situations on the border instead of denials and excuses from the administration.

Kamala Harris Receives Backlash

The laugh that Kamala Harris let out garnered backlash online.

@DivineTurbine expressed his disappointment, emphasizing that the border situation is not funny in any way. Another Twitter user shared his thoughts, saying that the laugh that Harris made is being used by the vice president whenever she was asked tough questions.

Another Twitter user asked why does the vice president always laugh on a serious matter. Some people were even curious if the laugh is a nervous tick.

The White House has yet to issue a response to media outlets regarding their take on the laughing Kamala Harris.

Recently, the Biden administration has awarded Immigration and Customs Enforcement an $86.9 million contract for hotel rooms near the border to secure additional housing for migrant families who have not been expelled from the U.S. but placed in immigration proceedings for their removal.
