Newsom on Reopening California
Newsom mentioned in his tweet that California has already administered about "20+ million" COVID vaccines among Californians. Newsom also noted that their state has the lowest positivity rate in the United States. Also, the state has stable hospitalizations.
Despite the governor's announcement of fully reopen the golden state by the target date, it does not mean that the mask mandate will be lifted.
"Everyday activities will be allowed, and business can open with common-sense risk reduction measures," said Newsom. Apart from the risk reduction measures the governor has emphasized, Newsom also noted that encouraging the people of California to get vaccinated and wearing masks should also be done.
The reopening of California will be affected by two factors. Vaccine supply must be sufficient and will be able to cater to Californians ages 16 and older also those who want to be immunized. Another factor is that the rates of hospitalization in the state must remain low and stable.
"We can now begin planning for our lives post-pandemic," said Newsom. However, Newsom emphasized that the people should remain "vigilant" and carry on with the practices that made the state be in a position where it can fully reopen.
California is planning to open the vaccine eligibility to 16 years old and older by April 15, according to a CBS Sacramento report. However, some areas and health plans like UC Davis have already moved into this phase.
People on California Reopening
Governor Newsom's announcement on Twitter stirred the sympathies of people online. One user expressed happiness, saying, "we're almost there! We're almost at the light at the end of the tunnel!" Some users are calling out the governor, saying, "provide vaccines to Kaiser and maybe it will happen." Another Twitter user expressed her excitement about going out and said they bought pretty masks to wear once they step out of the world.
Meanwhile, Republican gubernatorial candidate Kevin Faulconer calls out Newsom's action to be "motivated by his own survival," and he is not doing what's best for Californians. Faulconer also noted that Newsom's response to the coronavirus pandemic is "disastrous," noting that it took millions of petition signatures from the people of California for him to reopen the state.
Faulconer added in his statement that if Newsom wanted to help California "families across this state," the governor would reopen all public schools to be available for face-to-face learning.
