Queen Elizabeth II has experienced another loss with her puppy Fergus, who died just a month after her husband, Prince Philip, passed away.

The Sun reported that one of Queen Elizabeth's dorgi puppies died over the weekend at five months old. A royal insider shared with People that the news of Fergus' death on Wednesday was "all very sad."

Queen Elizabeth on Puppy Fergus' Death

Buckingham Palace has declined to comment on the incident. But the Sun reported that Queen Elizabeth was "devastated" when the puppy died.

E Online highlighted that the Fergus came into the life of Queen Elizabeth as a gift, together with another puppy named Muick. 

The puppies are known to be a "dorgi," which is a mixture of corgi and dachshund. The two puppies were reportedly a gift from Queen Elizabeth's son, Prince Andrew, in February, when Prince Philip was in the hospital.

Fergus was named after the Queen's uncle, Captain Fergus Bowes-Lyon, who died in 1915 as he led an attack on German lines at the Battle of the Loos in France during World War One. 

Meanwhile, Muick was named after Loch Muick, one of the Queen's favorite beauty spots at Balmoral in Scotland.

The arrival of Fergus and Muick came after another corgi of the monarch named Vulcan passed away late last year. People reported that Queen Elizabeth exercised the two puppies by walking them on the grounds of the Windsor Castle, where she lived alongside a few staff amid the coronavirus pandemic. 

It was also reported that the puppies stayed at the side of Queen Elizabeth during the times when Prince Philip was away in the hospital.

It was thought that Queen Elizabeth does not want to have any more dogs. People reported that it was because it risked the Queen of tripping over one of the pets. Another reason that circulated was that Queen Elizabeth does not want to leave puppies behind.

Because of Fergus' death, Queen Elizabeth is now left with Muick and Candy as her only dogs in the palace. Candy, also a dorgi, is the last living descendant of Susan, the dog she received during her 18th birthday in 1944.

Did Queen Elizabeth Have Other Dogs like Fergus?

E Online reported that Queen Elizabeth showed a special liking to corgis in particular. The Queen has reportedly owned at least 30 corgis since she first became the Queen in 1952.

The Queen's corgis, namely Monty, Holly, and Willow, has appeared in a sketch where Daniel Craig as James Bond arrived at Buckingham Palace to escort the Queen to the opening ceremony for the London 2012 Summer Olympics.

Queen Elizabeth's corgis also became a part of the 2016 Vanity Fair's Summer Edition. The dogs were photographed for the cover and were highlighted in the magazine's feature article.
