Bartram Trail High School in Florida Altered Images of Over 80 Girls in Yearbook To Hide Their Chests
The Bartram Trail High School in Florida is under fire after its yearbook coordinator intentionally altered images of over 80 girls to conceal their chests, the school district confirmed.
Riley O'Keefe, a ninth-grader at the school, said there had been rumors that the yearbook photos were altered, and it was confirmed when she finally got her copy, The New York Times reported.
O'Keefe said a black bar has been added to the images to cover more of her chest. Other female students had similar image alterations. Many of the edits covered more of their chests.
O'Keefe noted that other girls had approached her and said the alterations made them feel sexualized and exposed. Students and parents alike are demanding an apology for the photos.
They said that the edited images were the recent move of administrators, who have imposed an outdated dress code to police the way girls dress. O'Keefe noted that the administrators need to acknowledge that the move made girls feel ashamed of their bodies.
An employee of the high school did the edits. She was identified as Anne Irwin, according to a Complex report. Irwin said that they had made the decision based on the school's dress code. Irwin further defended her move by saying that she wanted the girls to appear more modest.
A spokesperson for the school district noted that there are different opinions, whether they were or were not in violation of the dress code.
Students' Yearbook Photos Are Digitally Altered
At least 80 female students of Bartram Trail High School in Florida had their yearbook photos altered without their consent.
No male students' photos were edited, even the one with the swim team, wherein the boys were wearing swim briefs by a pool.
Christina Langston, a district spokeswoman, said the school is currently offering refunds and "receiving feedback" from parents and students on making the process better for the following year.
The dress code at Bartram Trail High School in Florida states that shirts must be modest and not revealing or "distracting."
O'Keefe further noted that a male teacher had called out a student who wore a zip-up jacket over a sports bra, Chicago Tribune reported.
O'Keefe's mother, Stephanie Fabre, and stepmother, Taryn O'Keefe, noted that they intend to attend a school board meeting to call for changes to the dress code.
Dress Code of Bartram Trail High School in Florida
Students were enraged when administrators at the high school stood in the hallway and called out girls or took them out of class for violating the dress code.
The following days the girls and some of the boys protested on the matter. The girls had worn dresses and skirts, while one boy wore swim shorts over his pants and a bright pink wig.
O'Keefe noted that as far as she knows, none of the boys had been disciplined. O'Keefe started an online petition to change the dress code, earning around 5,000 signatures.
One parent, Adrian Bartlett, said the school had done a horrible job of ensuring their children's mental health by body shaming. She added that it is making their children feel like they should cover up their bodies.
