Nebraska Tornadoes News Update: Watch Twin Tornadoes Wipe Out 75% of Pilger [Video]
As much as three-fourths of a tiny town in Nebraska was destroyed Monday night when two giant twin tornadoes rummaged through parts of the state, killing one adult and a 5-year-old child.
The twin twisters bore down on Pilger, a small village in Stanton County, Nebraska populated by about 350 to 380 people. As a result, the rare tornadoes demolished the town fire station and about 40 to 50 homes, said Stanton County Sheriff Mike Unger, according to CNN. Dozens of people were also injured.
"More than half of the town is gone -- absolutely gone," said Stanton County Commissioner Jerry Weatherholt, reports USA Today. "The co-op is gone, the grain bins are gone, and it looks like almost every house in town has some damage. It's a complete mess."
The National Weather Service in Omaha tweeted Tuesday afternoon: "We are confirming several EF-4 damage points in Pilger." EF-4 tornadoes have wind speeds estimated at 166 to 200 mph.
In addition to a fatality brought into Faith Regional Medical Center in Norfolk, at least 15 people were also brought in with critical injuries.
The name of the 5-year-old girl who died of injuries Monday has not been released. A motorist also died Monday in a storm-related accident on a county road four to five miles east of Pilger.
Stanton County Sheriff Mike Unger estimated that up to 75 percent of Pilger was heavily damaged or destroyed in the storm. In addition, the local school is likely beyond repair, he said.
"It's total devastation," said Unger.
Storm chasers in Pilger captured dramatic video of the twin tornadoes tearing through the countryside and straddling a state highway.
"It was terribly wide," Marianne Pesotta told CNN affiliate KETV-TV. "I drove east [to escape]. I could see how bad it was. I had to get out of there."
Employees of the Farmers Co-op in Pilger who rode out the storm in the convenience store's cooler told CNN, "It seemed like forever, but I guess it was only a couple minutes, and it was coming down on top of us. But the coolers held together wonderfully."
