US Ambassador to Dominican Republic Speaks Out on Gay Rights Alongside His Husband [Watch]
The U.S. ambassador to the Dominican Republic, James "Wally" Brewster, appeared in a new video where he spoke about gay rights in honor of LGBT Pride Month.
Brewster appears with his husband, Bob Satawake, in the video.
"We are proud to celebrate with the millions of LGBT individuals celebrating life, diversity, inclusion, compassion and equality," he said.
Brewster was criticized because of his sexual orientation when President Obama nominated him last year. He is the seventh openly gay U.S. ambassador in history. He put down all the mean-spirited comments with this six-minute video.
"In many places around the globe, LGBT people face persecution, arrest or even state-sponsored execution," he said. "This is unacceptable."
Brewster has mainly received acceptance by the most of the Dominican government, but the Dominican Evangelical Fraternity called for a 'black Monday' protest to express their disapproval. It wanted residents to wear black ribbons to oppose Brewster.
The ambassador has vowed to fight for greater social inclusion, as some groups are still facing discrimination.
Brewster and Satawake have been together for 25 years, and they married just before Brewster became an ambassador. He previously worked in Chicago at a consultancy and worked as a fundraiser for the Obama campaign. And his video was perfectly on key with what he hopes to accomplish.
"Has it always been easy? No," he said. "But every day has been a blessing. Of course, there are those that were not so kind prior to our arrival ... who continue to discriminate against people because of who they are as human beings. I have to ask: Isn't it time to stop hating?"
He went on to quote Pope Francis, who said, "Who am I to judge a gay person of goodwill who seeks the Lord?" when asked about homosexuality.
