6.8 Seismic Magnitude Scale Earthquake Hits Panama and Costa Rica
The earthquake was initially reported by authorities with 7.0 seismic magnitude scales, then it was downgraded to magnitude 6.8, Sputnik News reported. However, the European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) noted that the strength of the said earthquake was at magnitude 6.9, Reuters reported.
Citing U.S. Geological Survey, Associated Press reported that the epicenter of the earthquake was off the Pacific coast of Panama and Costa Rica's shared border, which was relatively far from the countries' largest population centers.
The EMSC said that the earthquake hit at a depth of 2 KM, about 200 miles southeast of Costa Rica's capital, San Jose.
The shaking was felt in the capital of Panama but the shaking was also felt in some parts of western Panama and Costa Rica.
Costa Rica National Emergency Commission Head, Alexander Solis noted that the earthquake was felt almost in the entire country.
"We report that we have no damage to public infrastructure or personal injuries," Solis underscored.
Meanwhile Panama's Civil Protection Agency took to Twitter to announce their continuous monitoring of the areas where the earthquake was felt. The agency further noted that no damage has been reported after the tremor.
In Puerto Armueles, Panama, about 47 miles north of the earthquake's epicenter, a resident described the shaking to be "very strong and the strongest in the recent years." Sputnik News further noted that locals described the tremors to be short and only lasted for a few seconds.
No Tsunami Warning Was Issued
EMSC also mentioned another earthquake with 6.3 seismic magnitude scales, also shook near Panama. Furthermore, the quake was recorded to have a depth of 22 kilometers.
Despite the series of tremors that were experienced by Panama and Costa Rica, officials noted that the tremors did not raise any threats of tsunami occurring in the areas.
