FBI Official Had Romantic Relationship With Colleague, Violating the Bureau's Policy
A senior official from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was reported to breach the agency's policy after engaging in a romantic relationship with a subordinate. New York Post reported that the news was confirmed by a summary of the report by Michael Horowitz that was made public on Thursday.
The Hill noted that the report did not name the senior official who violated the bureau's policy. The Washington Post, citing a current and former official of the law enforcement, confirmed that Assistant Director Jill Tyson was the official discussed in the report.
FBI Officials Breach Bureau's Policy Over Romantic Relationship With Subordinate
The U.S. Sun reported that Horowitz found that Tyson "engaged in a romantic relationship with a subordinate and failed to timely report the relationship," which is considered a violation of the FBI policy.
Apart from not reporting their relationship, the report also revealed that Tyson also violated another policy of the agency when she participated "in a hiring or organizational decision involving the subordinate" she had a relationship with. Furthermore, Tyson allegedly permitted their relationship "to negatively affect an appropriate and professional superior-subordinate relationship" and interrupt the workplace by impeding the ability of other FBI employees to complete their work.
The report noted that Tyson was sent to the FBI and Justice Department's Office and of Professional Responsibility to determine what actions would be taken against the FBI official.
Tyson is currently the assistant director for congressional affairs. She was formerly a prosecutor, spokesperson for the Bureau of Prisons, and a former congressional staffer.
In her current role, Tyson manages all the interactions of the FBI with Congress.
Subordinate Involved in a Relationship With the FBI Official
Despite the violations Tyson committed, sources familiar with the matter confirmed that the allegations against the senior FBI official do not involve harassment or mistreatment of an individual with whom she had a relationship.
Meanwhile, the unidentified subordinate who had a relationship with the FBI official was transferred to a different department after Tyson reported their relationship, New York Post highlighted, citing a report. Furthermore, the investigation for Tyson began more than a year ago.
Other FBI Issues Placing the Bureau Under Criticism
The summary report from Horowitz that was made public on Thursday came as the FBI faces scrutiny over other issues. It can be recalled that earlier this month, Horowitz found out that the FBI's office located at Indianapolis mishandles a sexual abuse allegation against USA Gymnastics team doctor, Larry Nassar. Top agents of the said officers were reported to violate ethics rules as well as making false statements.
In the previous week, the FBI investigation on the alleged plot to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer was placed under fire when some of the individuals arrested in the said scheme claimed "entrapment" by undercover FBI agents.
