A 16-year-old boy in Oklahoma accidentally shot his mother while playing with a gun and then turned the gun on himself to commit suicide, police said.

According to PEOPLE, the Del City Police noted that the teen was playing with a pistol in the living room of their home in Del City, Oklahoma at around 11:20 p.m. on Saturday, when he accidentally fired the gun.

Police said a bullet went through the wall and struck his 36-year-old mother, Stephanie Rowshawne Jennings, in the head that resulted in her immediate death.

Del City Police Maj. Bradley Rule told PEOPLE that the bullet traveled through the wall that separated the living room from the kitchen and struck the boy's mom in the head.

"She fell to the floor right then and was deceased," Rule said. According to Rule, the boy, who the police did not identify, immediately ran to the kitchen and saw what he has done.

Rule said the boy saw his mother lying on the floor dead and then ran outside to the street "where he turned the gun on himself."

When police arrived at the scene after being called, they found the boy lying in the street with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Rule noted that the gun was resting beside the teen, who was rushed to a hospital in Oklahoma, but to no avail.

The Del City Police noted that the incident was terrible. Rule said he still does not know if the boy was messing with the gun or just playing with it.

However, he was sure that the boy was not cleaning the gun. He said it was a firearm in the house. The boy later died due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Rule believed that to handle a firearm and then it goes off was already "terrifying in and of itself." But he noted that to see the result of it, "shooting your own mother, I can't imagine what he felt."

Witness to the Tragic Incident in Oklahoma

Rule said they were able to interview somebody who was sitting in the living room when the incident happened. He noted that the eyewitness told them what happened, and the eyewitness' statement "lined up with the evidence on the scene."

Rule said he don't think the witness knew that the boy intended to kill himself. "I think he knew he was upset over what happened and they were trying to calm him down and then of course he shot himself," he noted.

Rule said they would still investigate it all the way to the end to confirm the facts and make sure there's nothing else going on that they don't know about.

The Medical Examiner's Office and the detectives would also continue investigating the incident to confirm eyewitness accounts with the evidence.

The victims' families declined to make a statement, but they expressed it was an accident and were at a loss for words.
