Ex-LA Lakers Dennis Schroder Signs $5.9 Million Deal With Rival Boston Celtics
After a week of free agency, Los Angeles Lakers point guard Dennis Schroder signed with the Boston Celtics. He made the announcement Tuesday on his social media account.
Sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski that the deal of Schroder was good for a year and would be for the $5.9 million taxpayer midlevel exception.
Dennis Schroder, who would be turning 28 in September, was the last remaining significant unrestricted free agent on the market, especially in the guard position.
From Los Angeles Lakers to Rival Boston Celtics
The German guard turned down a contract extension offered by the LA Lakers during last year's regular season, which was worth $80 million. Schroder did not accept the offer of the Lakers to pursue a bigger deal this summer.
However, things did not go his way, as no other team in the league was willing to offer Dennis Schroder a bigger deal than the Lakers.
Dennis Schroder would reportedly be joining a Celtics team with a hole at point guard in the wake of Kemba Walker after being traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder.
A possible stellar performance for Schroder would allow him to have a chance in boosting his value when he would hit the market again as a free agent next summer.
Dennis Schroder noted that Boston was one of the best franchises in NBA history, and it will be an honor to put on the green and white jersey and do what he loves.
"I'm proud to announce that for the 2021-22 season I'll be playing for the Boston Celtics!," he wrote on his Instagram.
Failed Los Angeles Stint
In his stint for the purple and gold squad, Dennis Schroder averaged 15.4 points and 5.8 assists in 61 games, all games as a starter for the Lakers. However, he got involved in a controversy after he entered the NBA's health and safety protocols.
He told a German publication that he and his superstar teammate LeBron James were the only Lakers players not to get vaccinated. But he eventually told local reporters that he was the only guy that didn't get vaccinated in the team.
After signing Dennis Schroder for the taxpayer midlevel exception, along with center Enes Kanter for a one-year minimum deal, the Boston Celtics is now sitting at a little over $4 million over the luxury tax line. The Boston Celtics already had 15 players with guaranteed contracts on its roster.
The Celtics were looking to bounce back after a disappointing season that saw them finish seventh in the East. The Celtics lost in five games to the Brooklyn Nets in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs last post-season.
