40 pythons were rescued from a motel room in Canada Thursday, after a couple held the slithering creatures in plastic storage bins.

According to Global Post, a landlord called the police after evicting the couple who owned the snakes, advising them that the python owners moved into the motel room in Brantford. The police arrived at the room while the couple was out and found clear plastic containers with the snakes in them.

The police found 1- to 4 ½-foot pythons. According to the city's animal control bylaws, Pythons are not allowed for home ownership, Reuters reports.

"The snakes were not being suitably cared for and were in distress. The anxious officers called the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals who attended and took 40 pythons into their care," a local police statement noted.

According to the manager of the Bell City Motel, the snakes belonged to a local couple who only stayed for one night. Refusing to be identified, the manager said the couple was out for dinner when the police arrived, the National Post reports.

After rescuing the snakes, they were taken to a veterinary to be checked. They are expected to be fine and will be kept in the custody of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, an animal rescue agency.

Global Post notes that the police have not pressed charges against the couple.

This incident is the second headlining case about pythons in Canada in over a month. Just a few weeks ago, two children died after being attacked by an African python in an apartment. The kids, aged 4 and 6, may have been strangled by the creature, "cutting off their air and blood supply until they were knocked dead."
