Lifetime TV Movies: A Look at Past Saved by the Bell' Cast, Characters and Spin-Offs Ahead of New Movie Release Date [Watch]
"Saved by the Bell" was a popular TV sitcom in the United States that aired on NBC from 1989 to 1993 and led to TV series spin-offs and three TV movies. The show dealt with the adventures of a principal and a group of high school friends.
Although it was mainly focused on situations that were comedic and light-hearted, the show managed to tackle socially-relevant issues such as the environment, death, divorce, drug use, homelessness, and driving under the influence. Stars of the original TV series were Mario Lopez, Elizabeth Berkley, Tiffani-Amber Thiessen, Dennis Haskins, Lark Voorhies, Dustin Diamond, and Mark-Paul Gosselaar.
The show's popularity prompted producers to create not one, but two spin-offs: "Saved by the Bell: The College Years," which ran from 1993 up to 1994, as well as "Saved by the Bell: The New Class," which aired from 1993 to 2000 and featuerd a new group of Bayside High School students.
In 1992, the first TV movie was released, entitled "Saved by the Bell: Hawaiian Style," and in 1994, "Saved by the Bell: Wedding in Las Vegas" became the second TV movie spin-off of the popular series.
The third TV movie of the franchise is being called "The Unauthorized Saved by the Bell Story," which is scheduled to air on Lifetime on Sept. 1, 2014. This will be a behind-the-scenes look at the lives of the '90s hit comedy series off-camera. It will depict the challenges the stars faced while they juggled work and their personal lives, yetmanaged to maintain their flawless images both on and off the camera.
The producers went to great lengths to cast look-alikes of the original cast. Newcomer Alyssa Lynch will play Thiessen. Voorhies's role will go to Taylor Russell McKenzie. Tiera Skovbye is going to play Berkley, and Lopez will be played by Julian Works. Diamond's role will go to Sam Kindseth, and Dylan Everett will be playing the role originally portrayed by Gosselaar.
