Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker Suspected of Taking Part in Criminal Scheme, Coordinating With Conservative Groups
Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker has been accused of illegally coordinating campaign fundraising activities between conservative groups in 2011 and 2012.
Although no charges have been filed against the Republican governor, prosecutors believe Walker was part of a wide-ranging "criminal scheme" to coordinate the activities of conservative groups that donated millions of dollars to help him and other Republicans durng a recall election, according to court documents, reports The Associated Press.
The documents were filed in December as part of an ongoing lawsuit by the conservative group Wisconsin Club for Growth, which challenged an investigation into campaign fundraising coordination.
In response, the potential 2016 presidential candidate called the allegations of wrongdoing "categorically false."
"The accusation of any wrongdoing written in the complaint by the office of a partisan Democrat district attorney by me or by my campaign is categorically false," Walker said in a statement, according to CBS News. "In fact two judges, in both state and federal courts, have ruled that no laws were broken.
"This is nothing more than a partisan investigation with no basis in state law," he continued. "It's time for the prosecutors to acknowledge both judges' orders to end this investigation."
Wisconsin prosecutors began investigating Walker and the groups in 2012 when Walker was facing a recall election. A federal judge temporarily halted the investigation in May, ruling that it was a breach of the group's free-speech rights. The judge also stated that the groups' coordination isn't illegal under state law since they did not engage in true advocacy.
The judge's decision is on appeal.
"Two judges have rejected the characterizations disclosed in those documents," said Walker campaign spokeswoman Alleigh Marre, referring to previous rulings.
Marre added that because Walker is not a party to the suit, the campaign has no control over any documents that are released.
