Paraguay Anti-drug Prosecutor Marcelo Pecci Killed in Colombia During Honeymoon
Paraguay's anti-drug prosecutor Marcelo Pecci was slain in Colombia by men who fled by sea while he was on a honeymoon, according to police and his widow.
Al Jazeera News reported that Pecci was killed by two shots on Tuesday while he was lounging on a beach on the tourist island of Baru, according to Paraguayan journalist Claundia Aguilera, who is his wife.
The 46-year-old prosecutor married Aguilera on April 30 in the nearby city of Cartagena.
His widow said that two men attacked Pecci, coming in a small boat or on a jet ski. She admitted that she did not see well.
Aguilera said that Pecci did not receive any threats. She noted that one of the assailants got out and shot Pecci twice, one hit him in the face and another in the back.
The Decameron hotel released a statement saying that assassins arrived on the beach and attacked and murdered one of their guests.
It was the hotel where the couple was staying.

Aguilera posted a photo of herself and her husband with a pair of baby shoes with a caption that reads, "the best wedding gift... the approaching life that is a testimony to the sweetest love."
The photo was showing Pecci and his wife on the Baru peninsula in the Caribbean, which is south of the Colombian city of Cartagena, according to an NBC DFW News report.
The gunmen had also fired at a security guard, who was unhurt, the Decameron Baru Hotel said.
Colombia's foreign minister and vice president, Marta Lucía Ramírez, commented in light of Pecci's killing.
Ramirez said that authorities were working to clarify the motives and suspects of the "heinous crime."
Colombian Defense Minister Diego Molano said that a "high command" criminal investigation unit had been deployed to Cartagena.
Meanwhile, police said that Paraguayan and U.S. officials will be integrated into the unit to help identify and prosecute the perpetrators.
Marcelo Pecci Probe
Colombia's national police chief General Jorge Luis Vargas said that a delegation of Paraguayan police will be involved in the probe.
Vargas noted that they have information being collected in the urgent effort, adding that it is confidential and will them identify those responsible for the crime, as reported by Reuters.
Vargas offered a reward of about $122,000 for information that could help solve the crime, as well as identify the people involved in the case. He added that authorities had deployed officers at airports and on the roads.
Pecci's office said in a statement that steps on their part were being taken to provide assistance and guarantee the safety of Pecci's family.
The anti-drug prosecutor was investigating several high-profile cases in Paraguay, including a January shooting in a concert, where an alleged drug trafficker and soccer player's wife were killed.
Pecci specialized in organized crime, drug trafficking, money laundering, and the financing of terrorism.
On top of that, he also led an operation that resulted in the seizure of dozens of properties acquired through money laundering, as well as the arrest of around 30 people this year.
