Activist Cornel West Says Donald Trump Enabling "War Against Black People"
Activist Cornel West has launched another claim against former U.S. President Donald Trump in his op-ed in The Guardian, alleging Trump is leading a "campaign of war" against Balck and Brown Americans.
West said in his op-ed that things have not changed even after a summer of protests following the killing of George Floyd in 2020, according to a Business Insider report.
West wrote that there was a "marvelous display of multiracial solidarity," not just in the U.S. but also around the world. However, the U.S., has been unable to fight against the "neofascist challenge."
The activist added that "Trump's forces" have become bigger and their focus is "people of color and other minorities."
West wrote that the former president "is not out there with a gun, but he is leading a campaign" like what Malcolm X called war against black and colored people. He added that Trump is doing it within the electoral political system, noting that he bears responsibility in terms of the context.
West wrote that Trump is still the dominant figure, no doubt.
Cornel West's Op-Ed on Donald Trump
Aside from Trump, West took a jab on Congress' inability to enact any "meaningful legislation," which included the George Floyd bill itself.
The George Floyd bill is a measure that would have given some mechanism with which to address police misconduct and brutality, according to his The Guardian op-ed.
He cited the Democratic party for not being able to act decisively to promote voting rights for black people, which he described as a "colossal failure" of U.S. President Joe Biden.
West said that Biden "bears a lot of responsibility when it comes to the position and arrogance of these white supremacists."
His op-ed was released following the mass shooting at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York.
Buffalo, New York Mass Shooting
The Buffalo mass shooting was allegedly a racist attack, which killed 10 people and injured three others, according to authorities.
NPR reported that almost all of the victims were Black, with the suspect believed to be the author of a post online detailing his white supremacist ideologies.
He had also live-streamed the attack and stated that he plans to target a Black community in New York.
The suspect has been charged with first-degree murder and would face a maximum sentence of life without parole if he is to be convicted.
Authorities noted that they are investigating the mass shooting as a racially motivated hate crime and also considering a terrorism charge.
Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said that the evidence they have uncovered so far proves that it was an "absolute racist hate crime," and would be prosecuted as such.
Eleven of the 13 victims who were shot were Black, while two were white. Four of the victims were store employees while some of the victims were actively working to serve their community.
The gunman was from Conklin, New York and drove more than 200 miles to launch the attack.
