The author of the "How to Murder Your Husband" essay, Nancy Crampton Brophy, was convicted by a jury of second-degree murder for shooting dead her husband.

According to People, the 71-year-old author was on trial for fatally shooting her husband, Dan Brophy, in June 2018. Nancy was found guilty on Wednesday.

After the verdict, the victim's mother, Karen Brophy, said she was very thankful that everything turned out the way it has, adding that "it's been a long three and a half years."

In the seven-week proceedings, prosecutors argued that Nancy could have possibly gained a generous amount of Dan's insurance money upon his death.

Prosecutors had called witnesses who claimed that the couple was suffering financial hardships when Dan was killed in the Oregon Culinary Institute, where he served as a chef and teacher.

Police said Dan Brophy was shot twice and was found dead by his students, according to Daily Mail. Shawn Overstreet, a deputy district attorney, claimed in closing arguments last week that Nancy Brophy had the plan in place.

Overstreet said Nancy was the only one with the motive and had the opportunity to carry out this murder. Prosecutors claimed the author killed her husband to collect his $1.4 million life insurance policy.

They further noted that Nancy's van was also spotted near the institute on traffic cameras on the day of the murder, adding that the author lied about where she was on this fateful morning.

As for the weapon used, prosecutors noted that Nancy purchased a Glock 17 handgun at a gun expo in Portland after looking up and buying a "ghost gun" kit online. They also said the author later bought a separate slide and barrel that could fit the firearm.

However, Nancy's lawyers noted that the gun pieces were for a novel she was writing, which is about a woman who slowly bought gun parts to complete a weapon and turned the tables on an abusive husband.

They added that Nancy would never kill her husband because of their endless love for each another. Lisa Maxfield, one of Nancy's attorneys, said the defense team plans to file an appeal.

Dan was shot two times to the heart on June 2, 2018 in a teaching kitchen at the Oregon Culinary Institute in Portland, where he had worked since 2006.

Nancy Brophy was reportedly caught on camera driving to the institute about half an hour before his death. She was seen driving away 20 minutes later and went home to Beavertown.

In a 2011 blog post, Nancy Brophy noted that a wife who plans to kill her spouse must be "organized, ruthless and very clever" as she was likely to become a prime suspect.

According to New York Times, the author said she pondered different methods of murder, adding that knives were too personal, poison was traceable, and hitmen were untrustworthy. Brophy then noted that guns were messy and required skills.

The romance novelist earlier testified that her handgun was for protection, bought with her husband's support, and the other gun component was for writing research.

Nancy Brophy now faces life in prison. Her sentencing hearing is scheduled for June 13.
