U.S. Monkeypox Cases Jump to 35; California, New York Lead the Number of Positive Cases
The number of monkeypox cases in the U.S. is rising, after at least 25 people from different states reportedly contracted the disease.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced the number of cases reported in 15 states.
California and New York have the highest cases of monkeypox, among the 15 states mentioned by the agency, per Fox News. CDC's data showed that eight cases of monkeypox were recorded in New York, while seven were reported in California.
Florida recorded at least four monkeypox cases, while Colorado has three. Illinois and Utah have two cases each.
Arizona, District of Columbia, Georgia, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and Washington recorded one monkeypox case each.
The CDC also noted in their report that one case detected in Florida that is listed in their database was also listed in the U.K. because the individual was tested there.

U.S. Detects Two Monkeypox Strains
Last Friday, the CDC announced that at least two genetically distinct monkeypox variants are currently circulating in the U.S., which adds to the confusion among health experts, CNBC noted.
Associated Press reported that many of the cases of monkeypox in the U.S. were caused by the same strain in the cases in Europe. However, federal health officials stated that some of the monkeypox cases in the U.S. are from a strain that was seen last year in the U.S.
"I think it's certainly possible that there could have been monkeypox cases in the United States that went under the radar previously but not to any great degree," CDC's Deputy Director Jennifer McQuiston.
McQuiston also said in a Friday press briefing that even though the strains are similar to each other, their genetic analysis showed that they are not linked to each other.
Global Monkeypox Cases Surpass the 1,000 Mark
This week, the monkeypox cases from all over the world surpassed the 1,000 mark.
CDC reported that at least 1,019 confirmed and suspected cases have been reported in at least 29 countries.
Reports mentioned that the United Kingdom holds the highest cases so far, with 302 suspected and confirmed infections. The U.K. was followed by Spain with 198 cases, and then Portugal with at least 153 who tested positive for the disease.
The World Health Organization (WHO) on Sunday said that more than two dozen countries where the monkeypox virus is not endemic have reported 780 cases.
CDC said that as of late, it is still unclear how people were exposed to monkeypox, but early data suggests that gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men make up a high number of cases.
The agency also pointed out that anyone who has been in close contact with someone who has monkeypox is also at risk of having the disease.
