Amid the ongoing border surge, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is planning to transport migrants deeper into the U.S. while waiting for their immigration proceedings.

According to internal documents obtained by NBC News, the DHS will transport migrants from the southern border to cities farther inside the country in the coming weeks, beginning with Los Angeles.

According to the Daily Mail, this plan is one of the measures the Biden administration considers as it prepares for the end of Title 42, which would prompt a border surge.

The new model will use federal funds to send migrants to shelter in cities farther inside the country before they go to their final destinations.

Besides Los Angeles, migrants could also be transferred to cities including Albuquerque, Houston, and Dallas, where the DHS is already preparing shelters in advance of moving migrants.

According to reports, the plan of the DHS would alleviate overcrowding along the border, where a record number of migrants overwhelmed the capacity of shelters within the area.

Migrants awaiting immigration proceedings are usually sent to shelters run by religious and nongovernmental organizations after they are released from CBP custody.

From there, migrants pay for flights and bus transportation to travel to cities where immigration judges hear their cases and rule on their asylum claims.

DHS Calls Sending Migrants Deeper Inside U.S as 'The Abbott Plan'

An official told NBC News that DHS officials have jokingly referred to the new model as the "Abbott plan," referring to Texas Governor Greg Abbott's decision to bus migrants from Texas to Washington, D.C.

Earlier in April, Abbott announced in a press conference that the lone star state is prepared to deliver migrants to Washington D.C.

Late last month, the governor noted that at least 45 buses have already transported migrants to the country's capital as a symbol of the Biden administration's "Open Border Policies."

Abbott has vowed to increase the number of bus trips with migrants processed at the border to Washington D.C. Several officials expressed disagreement with the move of the Texas governor.

Former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said Abbott has no legal authority to forcibly move migrants out of their state. She also called Abbott's move a publicity stunt.

Republicans Call on DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to Control Border Surge

According to Fox News, Republicans called on DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to utilize security equipment and technology at the southern border to mitigate the illegal migrant border crossings and the influx of drug and human smuggling.

Republicans made the demand through a letter that was sent to Mayorkas. Among the signatories of the letter were Representatives John Katko and Young Kim.

"We are troubled by claims that DHS is not fully deploying innovative 'smart' technologies along the border, such as AST towers and fiber optic sensors.... procured by the federal government through contracts previously granted for building border barrier infrastructure," the lawmakers wrote.

The lawmakers noted that failing to respond adequately to the upcoming surge of illegal crossings presents a major risk to CBP personnel.
