Ecuador has felt some tremors as a magnitude 5.8 earthquake was reported. Its epicenter was recorded near Babahoyo, Cantón Babahoyo, Provincia de Los Rios, Ecuador. It hit on July 14 at 5:30 p.m., local time.

The earthquake had a shallow depth of 10 kilometers. However, the exact magnitude, epicenter, or depth of the earthquake might be revised in the next few hours as seismologists are still reviewing data and might refine their calculations.

Earthquake Widely Felt by Everyone Nearby

According to Crisis 24, the earthquake was felt in the areas of Guayas, Santa Elena, Camara, Azuay, Chimborazo, Bolivar, Los Rios, and Manabi provinces. So far, there still have been no initial reports of damages to property or casualties.

Areas around 40 kilometers near the epicenter, such as San Francisco de Milagro, Yaguachi Nuevo, Samborondon, Ventanas, Duran, and Guayaquil, should have only felt some light shaking, according to Volcano Discovery.

The earthquake itself is considered shallow, so significant damage is unlikely. However, it might take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments. This is especially true in the more remote areas in Ecuador.

Officials may shut down transportation and infrastructures near the tremor zone to check for damages. Aftershocks are also likely to come in the next few days.

Varying Reports on True Magnitude of Earthquake

Seismologists are still gathering data, but several other monitoring services have already released their reports on the quake's magnitude, according to Volcano Discovery. France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) measured the quake at a magnitude of 5.7 while the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) both measured it at a magnitude of 5.8.

These are still the preliminary seismic data, so later reports will be more accurate.
