A Florida man allegedly beat his mother with a hammer and stabbed her repeatedly after plotting to kill her for a year, authorities said.

According to the Clearwater Police Department in Florida, Logan Lopez, 24, allegedly confessed to his crime over the weekend.

Police Alerted After Neighbors Reported Arguing in Apartment of Florida Man

Police said Logan Lopez lured his 53-year-old mother, Mary Beth Lopez, to his apartment by asking her to drop off his mail which had been sent to his family address.

Major Natalia Illich-Hailey with the Clearwater Police Department told reporters that the Florida man also invited his mother into his apartment to show off his new furniture, People reported.

However, Illich-Hailey noted that the suspect closed the door once she was inside his apartment on Saturday. And after the Florida man came up behind his mother, he struck her with a hammer and stabbed her with a knife multiple times.

A neighbor then reported a woman's screaming and banging from Lopez's apartment at The Palms at Countryside in Clearwater. Authorities arrived soon after, and they found the suspect's mother dead.

Florida Man Plans Mother's Murder For One Year

Logan Lopez was arrested without incident and told investigators that he lured his mother to his home after planning for a year to put "an end to her," WFLA-TV reported.

The Florida man added that he killed his mother because she had "enslaved" him. According to Illich-Hailey, Logan knew what he was going to do and what was going to happen. He lured his mother into his place for that one purpose.

Police reported that he never had any run-ins with the law before his arrest, except in February, when he was temporarily detained and provided emergency mental health services under Florida's Baker Act.

The said law allows family members to have a loved one detained for mental health services if that person is not able to determine their treatment needs.

According to Crime Online, Lopez is facing a first-degree murder charge related to killing his mother. The police have already booked him on that charge at the Pinellas County Jail early Sunday morning.

People reported that the Florida man currently has public defender Margaret Russell to defend him. Speaking on behalf of Russell, Chief Assistant Public Defender Greg Williams told People that they were "saddened by this tragic incident." 

He added that Logan Lopez "was just arrested, and no formal charges have been filed by the prosecutor." WLFA reported that an autopsy on the Florida man's mom is already underway. It will determine the extent of her injuries before her death.
