Tesla CEO Elon Musk is reportedly the reason why Google co-founder Sergey Brin and his wife Nicole Shanahan separated.

Sources told the Wall Street Journal on Sunday that Musk engaged in a brief affair with Shanahan last fall, prompting the Google co-fonder to file for a divorce.

According to Blaze, the affair between Musk and Shanahan started during the Art Basel art show, an event held in Miami, Florida last December.

At the time of the affair, Brin and Shanahan were reportedly separated but still living together. The couple allegedly had trouble connecting due to COVID-19 and taking care of their toddler daughter.

Records from Santa Clara County Superior Court revealed that Brin filed for divorce in January, citing "irreconcilable differences."

The document was reportedly filed weeks after Brin discovered his wife's affair with the SpaceX founder. The filing also showed that the couple broke up on December 15 last year.

Shanahan is now seeking $1 billion in her divorce with Brin. The said amount is more than she is entitled to in their prenuptial agreement. However, Shanahan's legal team argued that she signed the prenup while she was pregnant.

"I hope for Sergey and I to move forward with dignity, honesty, and harmony for the sake of our child. And we are both working towards that," Shanahan told Puck earlier this month.

Brin and Shanahan were husband and wife for nearly four years. The couple reportedly met at a yoga retreat, Wanderlust, about seven years ago. Both have also been from a previous marriage.

The friendship between Elon Musk and Sergey Brin was reportedly put under strain after the Tesla CEO's affair with the Google co-founder's wife.

According to the source, Musk apologized to Brin for what happened. He allegedly dropped to his knees to beg for forgiveness.

Brin reportedly acknowledged the apology from Musk, who was his friend. However, the two have not spoken regularly after. Their businesses were also affected by the alleged affair.

Brin reportedly ordered his financial advisers to sell his investments in Musk's companies. It was unclear how large the investments were.
