Mexico: Locals 'Fed up' as Massive Wave of Americans Move to Country, Increase Cost of Living
Mexico locals are reportedly not happy with the migration of people from the USA, many from California, into their country.
According to Fox News, Mexicans are "fed up" with the growing number of Americans who are moving to and visiting Mexico.
With the migration's influx of people from the USA, especially in Mexico City, reports claimed that local taquerias and corner stores have transformed into coffee shops and Pilates studios. The migration of Americans into Mexico City also prompted a rise in rent.
According to a separate report from the Los Angeles Times, the price of a one-bedroom apartment in Koreatown equates to a penthouse in some of Mexico City's most graceful neighborhoods.
"There's a distinction between people who want to learn about the place they are in and those who just like it because it's cheap," said 31-year-old Hugo Van Der Merwe, who works remotely in Mexico City.
Der Merwe added that he met people who do not care about being in Mexico but care about the cheap means of living in the city.
The language was also affected due to the influx of Americans in the city. A writer and university professor, Fernando Bustos Gorozpe, noted that locals are the only brown people in several places such as restaurants, adding that the only Spanish speakers were them and the waiters.

Mexico City Locals on USA Migration
The locals of Mexico City have expressed their frustration with the influx of Americans, mostly from California, through several platforms, such as social media and fliers.
According to reports, fliers directed to the foreigners read: "You're a f---ing plague, and the locals f---ing hate you. Leave." A social media post from a young American urging other Americans to work remotely in Mexico City, claiming that it is "truly magical," also gathered negative comments from the locals.
According to Fox News, one user pleaded with Americans not to do that, arguing that Mexico City is becoming increasingly expensive every day because of foreigners.
"Mexico is classist and racist... Now, if a local wants to go to a restaurant or a club, they don't just have to compete with rich, white Mexicans but with foreigners too," Bustos Gorozpe noted.
The migration influx of people from the USA into Mexico City reportedly started in 2016, when the New York Times named the county's capital the world's top travel destination. International artists, including chefs and designers, were reportedly among those who owned inexpensive studio spaces.
In addition, the pandemic was also a factor in the influx of Americans to Mexico. Europe and Asia closed their borders during COVID-19's onset, but Mexico only adopted a few restrictions, making it accessible.
Moreover, Americans can stay in Mexico for six months without a visa.
Mexico Migration
Meanwhile, the migration of people from Mexico is rampant in the United States. The latest report of migrant encounters released last week had a total of 2,002,602 encounters since October, surpassing the total migrant encounters in the previous fiscal year, which was only 1,956,519.
The report showed that migrants from Mexico still make up the highest nationality encountered at the U.S. border, followed by the asylum seekers from Guatemala and Honduras.
