California CBP Officers Seize $8M Worth of Drugs in 5 Days
Customs and Borders Protection (CBP) officers from California on Thursday revealed that they have seized several packages of drugs worth $8 million in five days.
According to Fox News, CBP officers from Calexico, California, discovered nearly 500 packages of methamphetamine and fentanyl on different occasions.
All subjects involved were turned over to the U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) for further investigations.
According to CBP, the total estimated amount for the drugs seized in five days was $8.25 million.
"Remaining vigilant for something that looks out of place and keeping a keen eye for unusual travel patterns is what our officers are trained to do," CBP acting director of Field Operations in San Diego, Anne Maricich, said.
CBP Port of Director for the Calexico Port of Entry in California Davis Salazar said fentanyl is a very "lethal drug" that is on the rise. Salazar assured that their officers will continue to keep the said narcotics off the streets of the U.S.
Over $8M Worth of Drugs Seized by California CBP Officers
The said drugs, composed of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and marijuana, were seized by the California CBP officers on different occasions.
On July 17, a total of 72.33 pounds of methamphetamine were discovered by CBP officers when they used the port's imaging machine.
On July 16, 66.40 pounds of fentanyl and 2.35 grams of marijuana were found by CBP officers in California.
CBP officers also discovered 106.30 pounds of fentanyl when they used the port's imaging machine on July 15.
The largest discovery of fentanyl took place on July 14, when CBP officers conducted a canine screening, wherein 227.92 pounds of fentanyl were reportedly discovered.
Meanwhile, the first day of the drug bust in California occurred on July 13, and 130.19 pounds of fentanyl were discovered by CBP officers after noticing tampering with the vehicle during an initial cursory inspection.
Other Drug Busts in the West
California is not the only state where drugs were seized by the authorities.
On Saturday, border agents from Arizona discovered a huge load of several types of drugs inside a gas tank and other parts of the said vehicle.
Reports claimed that the drugs contained 2.5 pounds of black tar heroin, nine pounds of heroin, and 89 pounds of methamphetamine. Furthermore, authorities also reported that 320,000 fentanyl pills were also discovered.
The drugs found on Tuesday were reportedly hidden inside the gas tank, the side, and rocker panels of a vehicle trying to get inside the United States.
A separate bust that happened also on Saturday has also led to the confiscation of 40 pounds of drugs and 150,000 fentanyl pills hidden inside the rocker panels of another vehicle.
